BANGKOK, 24th December 2018 (NNT) – The Thai Embassy in Jakarta has confirmed that no Thai people were affected by the tsunami that hit Lampung in Indonesia and that the phenomenon has had no impact on Thailand 1,700 kilometers away.

Thai Ambassador to Indonesia Songpol Sukchan reports that a survey of Thai citizens in Lampung in Indonesia has confirmed all are safe. Most of the 30 or so Thai people in the city are students. The embassy has however issued a call on its website, Facebook page and on Line for Thai people traveling to Indonesia to register at www.thaiembassyjakarta.com so that they may be tracked during times of emergency. It posted its emergency phone number +62 - 811 - 186 - 253.

The Meteorological Department indicates that the earthquake that set off the tsunami occurred 69 kilometers underground in the Sunda Strait off the southern coast of Sumatra island. The event does not directly impact Thailand and the country's citizens shouldn't anticipate any danger from the eruption of the volcano on Krakatau in Indonesia.

Well they're the only people to detect an earthquake. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) didn't record any seismic events that evening, and neither did the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The BMKG are saying the tsunami was triggered when the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted causing a series of underwater landslides. But no one knows for sure what it was, though an earthquake it wasn't.

This is very close to the only news, that is important in this circumstance" will Thai- tourism be affected...

Why is it that over and over again when someone should be offering condolences they instead state “no Thais are affected”. I’m not aware of any other nation that consistently does this.
