BANGKOK, 26th December 2018 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has cited 2019 as another very important year for Thailand. In addition to the elections which will lead to sustainable democracy, Thailand will have an important role in advancing the ASEAN Community.

As ASEAN Chair in 2019, he said, Thailand will open its home to welcome leaders and foreign dignitaries, including ASEAN friends and ASEAN’s dialogue partners. Thailand will host over 180 meetings, in both major and secondary towns.

Gen Prayut invited all Thais to join hands as good hosts for smooth and successful meetings for the pride of the nation, and to fulfill the expectations of the international community.

He stressed that ASEAN’s success depends on a partnership of all sectors, working to promote and advance the ASEAN Community in a sustainable manner.

Over 50 years ago, ASEAN was born in Thailand, he noted, adding that ASEAN has a population of six hundred million people and is the sixth largest economy in the world. It has played a constructive role and is well-received by the global community. Hence, the opportunity to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship is an important duty, an honor for Thailand and the Thai people.

The Prime Minister congratulated Khemphong Rungsawang and Chayuta Homhnug, the designers of the logo Thailand will use during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2019. The logo is inspired by flower garlands which are a Thai symbol of welcome. In addition, the beautiful flower arrangement represents the ASEAN Community’s unity, cooperation, and support for each other.

Pretty well the most honest, true and correct thing that he's said in 5 years. And, as for the ASEAN chair, if even the sweetest talking questioner asked him his views on the way forward for ASEAN and how Thailand might contribute to this, he'd start crying and shout "Porky, you were right . . . they are asking unfair questions again."

All I hope is that he doesn't stuff up the big responsibility he has and bring shame and on the Country and embarrassment to it's people. He is inclined to be a loose cannon sometimes so I hope he has his minders are on hand to keep him well advised and his mind on the job.

BTW what happens if he is not Prime Minister after the election?

A FREE and FAIR election without any dodgy goings on might go some way to assuaging the expectations of the Int' community ..

You don't really believe such enactments will change anything, do ya?

More importantly, life gets on as it always has -

Most disconnected outsiders don't have the ability to see things as they are, instead create their own illusion - or have a few implanted - to justify their ignorant perspectives regarding such cultural-centric perspectives, which have less to do with Thai/Thailand than not.

Agreed. It will be a very important year for Thailand. It will be the year, that you, Mr. Prayuth exit stage left, lose your power, lose the election, and disappear into oblivion, never to be remembered again, by a single person in this nation. You will be forgotten so fast, you will marvel at how incredibly irrelevant you will become overnight.

You are not wanted. You are not liked. You are not popular. The people of this nation despise you, and your army. You have done nothing for your people. You have degraded the economy, sabotaged tourism, and you have the nerve, the audacity, to ask the people to give you another term in office? Get out. Get out now.

You might get a better overall picture if you understood contemporary Thai history/society....

Obviously, you [and most others] haven't a clue.

The ASEAN dates are set for June 22 & 23, later than normal and especially to allow for Thailand possibly needing time for a new govt to be formed. The chair will surely pass to the new PM which, on grounds of common decency, cannot be Prayuth. So mae pen rai, my chocolatey pal, the Chairing will pass respectably.

Who is truly qualified to head up ASEAN?

Such a beast?

Most of us adamantly hope you are dead wrong on this one. I believe he will be ousted with a fury. He is truly despised, as is the army.

Sustainable democracy translated: Expect to see 20 more years of pro-junta, pro-Prayut

Read your Thai history bubba.

Indeed.

Seems to be a common characteristic among the fine members of this illustrious venue - attempting to substitute ideals that have nothing whatsoever to do with a way of life in Thailand.

They become so gung-ho and falsely enthusiastic towards their made up understanding of today's affairs, yet blinded to the aspect of how historic relevance remains steadfast and connected to the present - cycling itself ever so carefully. The punditry fails to understand Thai society and it's historic matter from the very core.

Their ever-insisting Western promotions and perspectives, as such applies to everything Thai, has little to do with anything.

Such continuous intercultural comparatives, references, analysis, theories, and contrive pedantry fails short of being moot.

One might consider that reasoned lucid folk would be able to functionally decipher the differences and ridiculousness of applying Western absolutes and values on things Thai [or any other non-Western entities] has little or no worth.

From simple and long observations, the obvious connective tissues are vacant.

Subliminal civilisation missions remain the fanciful fashion.

Mighty empires have fallen and historic references erased. Way of life can be dramatically changed with a new order. History is only good for books.

And I feared I was becoming paranoid in my loathing of this cretin. A few million more like-minded souls - Thais, obviously - and we might just be dancing in two months time. I actually dream - I've had more than two of them! - of seeing this apology for humanity slithering his way out of Government House, dragging trailer-loads of redundant blouses behind him.

Visions of Tuk Tuk drivers offering 20 Baht tours of the city come to mind.  Thais are welcoming.  That is why people come here.  The government is not all that welcoming.

You appear to be saying that those with Western perspectives should not attempt to impose them on non Western cultures.

Why not say so simply?

However ignoring your dreadful prose style, there is a fallacy at the heart of your argument. While accepting cultural differences, many Western values are in fact universal values which by accident of history first took root in a Western Europe and its outposts.

ASEAN meetings where all the leaders sit around laughing at all the human rights they've abused, elections they've rigged, drug addicted citizens they've killed, money they've laundered, prisoners they've executed, citizens they've made stateless, the amount of Muslims they've killed, awards they've been stripped of for failure to protect their people, watches bought, etc.
