Baan Noi residents repair a stretch of road Saturday.

LOEI — Tired of waiting for officials to fix a treacherous stretch of road known for causing frequent accidents, a group of neighbors in the northeast did the work themselves Saturday.

Armed with cement and tools, more than 50 residents of Baan Noi in Loei province filled the potholes along 900 meters of road this morning. Community leader Adul Polkham said they decided to act after many Japanese tourists had accidents riding motorcycles through their community in recent weeks.

“Many tourists ride past here each day,” Adul told reporters, adding that the residents also fear more accidents will take place during the New Year holidays if they didn’t do something.

"Worried by Tourist Injuries" may have I some doubt about the real worry.

Mixed blessing. The approach road to our housing area suffers from an underground watercourse which causes a large pothole in one lane of the narrow lane. A Thai local fixed it using hand mixed concrete and ever since them there has been a serious hump in the road which all m/c and vehicles avoid by slewing into the oncoming lane!

I don't doubt it, we were unable to drive our vehicle down the soi near our house during the rainy season because the local government would not concrete it, one of the neighboring property owners bought several loads of red rock dirt to cover the road where it passes their property, another neighbor told me it was because she felt bad for us.

Of course, the officials will be thinking, See what a great job we do. Everything repaired and at no cost to our budget (feed trough). We have trained the locals well.

Any surplus concrete should have gone into the officials letter box... he might have got the message.

Very good work. Sometimes, when the government is inept, inefficient, corrupt and indifferent, it is a beautiful thing when the citizens take measures, to do the work the officials were supposed to make sure got done. It is a mild form of civil disobedience, which may cause the local officials to lose face, and that is always a good thing.
