Up country, if your expectations of life are pretty limited, it is indeed possible to live as frugally as you suggest. All that assumes that you have no health problems or other issues. Thailand (and most other countries) are not especially keen to have people of limited means retiring there. The benefits to the economy are minimal, and there are risks of being forced to deal with indigent foreigners. Really, $2,000 a month is not a huge sum for someone to be spending for a comfortable and enjoyable life.

On Bht 8000 a month you must be living rather frugally, I assume you pay no rent, very little electricity, do not have internet or health insurance.

I think frugally is a bit of an understatement

8,000 a month?.....Even the cheapest cheap charlie could hardly make it on 8,000 a month...

I know an American who was living here on 1000 baht a week. He claimed he was licking up ants from the floor for the protein.

The new rules + potential Health insurance are pushing people to spend less money by not bothering with a visa and yearly extension, problem solved

I bet if some one set things up right they could live here 10-15-20 years easy with out getting caught.....And after you got caught pay your 30Gs and just move to another country....

I live very cheaply in Thailand for about 80 thousand baht a month. I am STILL not at the level of income that Thai Immigration desires to see among its Non-O Visa holders and those receiving yearly extensions of stay. The "gouge factor" truly never ends. A constant process of "feeding the tiger".

The OP can't fight City Hall. 800K it is. Look for another country if you don't like it.

His budget will only be sustainable until his first health problem, then it will be blown out of the water.

Example: I developed cellulitis in my right foot. A month later, with intravenous antibiotics, my wallet was 11,000 baht lighter. And that was a minor medical problem.

yes 100s maybe 1000s will be forced to do it. Moving to a new country after then isn't so bad

Do Thai Immigration not want to see Bht 65k per month coming in, but not expecting you to spend it all. Bht 80k per month = cheaply? I think not. Depends of course on where you live, life-style, demands from wife/GF etc.

Accept 800k and feel like a 3 star general (about the same income).

And if you spent wise even money for some nice watches will be left over.

Mum-in-law lives on 3,000~4,000, at 7,000 she was very unhappy and drinking herself to death, she is much better off and happier with the smaller amount.

What a BS story, she can eat better food, clothes and doesn't have to drink so much

8,000 Baht a month is existing, not living! I'm hardly extravagant - yet my electric bill alone still averages 6k a month though. Doesn't leave a lot for "quality" food and drink!

Sure Thai people can live on next to nothing, I'm not Thai, I don't want to just "exist"

I'm surprised they haven't raised the amount from 800k to be honest, been at that figure a long time!
