Korat: Crane driver crushed to death by rocks as his crane collapses

A crane driver working at a construction site in Nakorn Ratchasima was crushed to death yesterday under rocks weighing 30 tons. 

 

Forty six year old Wichan's work colleagues saw it all.

 

He had been lifting the load at the Si Khiw site when the arm of the crane snapped. 

 

He was unable to exit the cab in time.

 

Sanook reported his colleagues as saying that the crane was overloaded. 

 

The accident happened at kilometer marker 90 in Lat Bua Khao sub-district.

Trying to do something his machine wasn't designed to do.  Result - loss of his life. 

Cutting corners, and ignoring safety rules because they only apply to others. Perfectly normal in Thailand.

Unfortunately this guy probably didn't have much choice. For him it was likely "do this or get another job". Of course the problem continues because the people responsible are never held accountable.

Let's hope it was quick for the poor sod.

 

Things like this were pretty common in Western countries, many decades ago. The situation improved when employers had to pay massive fines and compensation for their failure to provide their employees with proper training, well-maintained equipment, and reasonable working hours.

Chickenslegs I’m sure it was quick rip and I hope the company is held accountable (I know it won’t)a sad avoidable accident

Certainly not as often, and there are no big fines ????

Agreed but these and similar events still happen in western countries; collapsed cranes, bridges falling, construction materials falling from high-rise buildings ...... .

To error seems inevitable.

No safety rules, no training, no accountability... all end in the same way eventually.
