Hello to everyone. I am new to Thailand and Chiang Mai, but will be living here when not working in the US. 

I was wondering if there are any ex pat golfers clubs or groups. Or anyone who plays golf once or twice a month 

and would like a partner. Thanks

Within the city check out Stardome & Gym Khana courses both have driving ranges where you can meet other golfer (though here in CM 95% are Thai or Asian so there is language barrier to get to know most locals)... If you have a car check out San Sai New Golf, Hang Dong Golf and Green Valley... These are more local courses that locals frequentl...

 

Also check out M Sport Complex driving range on the east side of town...

There's a driving range next to Yummy Pizza....Off the canal road on Hang Dong/Mae Hia area.....

Gymkhana probably has the largest population of expats. It runs a couple of not-really-serious competitions twice a month. Handicapping is brutal. Turn up as a single, and you will most probably be put in a group to play.

You may join the Chiang Mai Social Golfers and play golf with them at 4 weekly venues in/near CM.

Or go to O'Malleys and introduce yourself to Scott the owner. An avid golf fan, he sponsers an annual golf tournament and just about everynight there are a group of Canadian golfers sitting outside with him. He even organizers side trips to the courses in Chiang Rai and a hotel stay.

What do you shoot and how much you want to spend?

Gynkhana yes does have a lot of expats mostly Brits who like to drink. But, it is a Cheap Charlie 9 hole course with old facilities. The range is not bad.

If you do not mind spending more for much better courses Lanna, Summit Green Valley, or MaeJo CC are all nice.  I play Summit as it is a few minutes from where I stay.

Typically how busy are the courses during the week? I avoid playing in Bkk as a round can take up to 5-6 hrs even during weekdays

I think you need to be more specific with your questions.

Normally, if you play early like I do ( 7am) there is no problem with a round less the 4 hours.  After that this time of year many groups or tournaments are scheduled and it can be slow.

Surprisingly, the after noons at a lot of these places (after 2pm) are not that busy and some offer reduced rates.

So, if you show up at 9 am you may be looking at a long day.

Hit off as early as you can, anywhere in Thailand. Asians tend to play in sixes or even eights as it is mostly socialisation, and their golf etiquette does not extend to players behind them.

I think this is unique to Thailand. Having played in HKG, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, I find the level of golf etiquette much higher and have never encountered a 5 or 6 ball flight.

A bit out of the way; however, Haripunchai near Lamphun is a really good nine-hole course and not too expensive if you take a passport or driving licence along. From memory, weekdays 1100 baht including cart and caddy. Fairway grasses, greens and bunker sand are a cut above what's normally found around Chiang Mai. No pushover either, lots of water. Locker room facilities very good as well.

It may well be. Starter discipline here tends to be governed by how important the golfer is.

The Koreans and Japanese I play with are very fast players which is great. They do gamble some.

The Thais are slower I think mainly because they are drinking and gambling big time.

 

Another thing a little strange here.  If you show up alone they actually think you want to play alone.  If you are Falang at a mostly Asian played course you may find yourself going out alone and playing very slowly. And trying to join a group of Thais is usually impossible due to the high stakes involved they do not want you bothering them.

Apart from Chiang Mai Social Golfers, there's also All Championship Golf. All Championship Golf is a mixture of Thais with about 5 or 6 farangs. They have a FB page "Allgolf" and they usually play the first Friday of the month and at a different course each month. Their next outing is March 8th at Inthanon. 850 baht green fee caddy & cart. Tee time around 9.30.  They are happy to have some farangs in the group as it gives them an opportunity to practice their English. If your interested message them from their FB page. Also no joining fee involved. 

What’s the membership fee for CMSG? And benefits? I looked at the website but it was rather scant on details.

My apologies I just had a chance to read the website which seems to be outdated. Sounds like a social club not golf specific only golf
