Hiring A Car In The UK Showing A Thai Licence

Featured Replies

My UK license has expired and I'll probably want to hire a car in the UK.

Anyone been able to hire a car with a Thai licence as proof of driving ability?

Oh, the irony.... I think you need to have your Thai license for minimum 1 year, get it converted to international, don’t know how well it’d go down back in your home country though.

You can hire with a Thai licence if it's a full 5yr version. No need for an IDP

Yes, I came here with an IDP plus my English license, so had no problem getting a 1 year Thai licence and then a 5 year.

Yes, mine is a 5 year, so that's good news. Did you do it yourself or did someone you know do it? I suppose there ought to be some information on a rental site about what they accept as proof. I'll Google it tomorrow.

See Carlos's answer.

Should be easy, no more required than your 5 year Thai license.

I've done it myself on a few occasions.

Never tried it in the UK, but have done it in the US, Australia and NZ with a 5 year license.

Hired a car from Avis at Heathrow about two years back using a 5 year Thai licence. In addition just needed to show my UK passport and valid credit card.
