I downloaded Thunder VPN last week and got a weeks free trial. I downloaded it to enable me to watch BBCs IPlayer. It ran ok for a week so decided to subscribe (not expensive) and that's when the problem started. It started to buffer almost continuously, so did a speed test, I was shocked to find that with the VPN connected I was getting about 10MBPs and disconnected over 100MBPs. Has anyone else noticed a considerable drop like this?

Is that 10MBps or 10Mbps? (yes there is a difference, a factor of about 10).

Anyway, yes a VPN will (usually) slow things down.

Using testmy.net to London I get 93Mbps on my TOT 500Mbps fibre and no VPN.

Using Ivacy VPN's London server and testing to london I get 20Mbps.

What do you get to London with no VPN?

10Mbps ought to be enough for the BBC iPlayer if it's reasonably stable, make sure you've not got the fixed HD quality set.

Thanks for the reply Crossy. It is 10 Mbps. But to check the HD or SD settings I had to log into the BBC web site. I could not find such settings, but whilst I was logged in I tried it again and it worked perfectly. So that seems to have done the trick. Thanks again.

As an engineer 8 is definitely in the "about 10" bracket :whistling:

But, coming from an era when "high-speed" teletype was about 75bps (yes, bits per second, with 5 bit Baudot code) my definition is:-

Bits per second considers all the bits in a character, which in our case could be between 10 (one start, eight data, one stop) and 12 (one start, eight data, one parity, two stop).

Bytes per second counts whole characters.

So 1000 characters per second (Bps) could be 10,000 bits per second up to 12,000 bits per second.

10Mbps ought to be enough to watch BBC iPlayer outside UK if it's reasonably stable, make sure you've not got the fixed HD quality set.

Google for smart dns technology to watch BBC iPlayer. It's better then VPN for video streaming.
