Hospitals in Chiang Mai

I'm looking for two different kinds of hospitals in Chiang Mai. Which one do you recommend?

1. The best hospital, price does not matter

2. A hospital which offers good service but has reasonable prices, can also be a government hospital if it doesn't mean i have to wait several hours before seeing a doctor

 

If you wonder why i'm looking for two different hospitals, this is just because of the deductible of my insurance. If i just need something small like a rabies shot i pay this out of my own pocket, and if it would be something critical i don't care about the price, i just want the best treatment, higher costs will be covered by the insurance anyway.

I like McCormick Hospital for reasonable prices. I don’t like any of the money-no-object hospitals I’ve tried in Chiang Mai. The receptionists at Bangkok Hospital try to diagnose you before you see a doctor and argue with you when you decline certain tests/procedures, I’ve encountered several doctors at Lanna that believe they can diagnose physical problems from behind their desk and to be honest, I dislike Ram simply because it’s owned by the same people that own Lanna (and Thepanya I believe, another hospital where they offer remedies based on guesswork). So, Ram would probably be my recommendation from the more expensive hospitals, by default.

I think the best is C.M. Ram overall. Sriphat has good doctors (that also practice at Ram and other places), but waiting times have become practically intolerable and prices have gone up again effective 01/01/2019. My wife figures Sriphat's fees are up in the neighborhood of 300% over the last 10 years. They can't offer some things that Ram can as well (such as general anesthesia on some procedures). When I was price shopping recently for a couple of procedures, Ram was less than Sriphat. I would not go to McCormick for anything serious.

 

But one does not fit all. For example Dr. Chanakarn (best ortho surgeon here) will give several choices of where he will operate that will fit any budget or convenience of location; including Rajavej, Ram, Sriphat, Bangkok, and Chang Phueak Hospital. So it's best to find the doctors you like and see where they practice. Most, if not all, have private clinics as well.

As far as I know, the only public hospital is Suan Dok in Suthep and you have to wait a long time as in several hours. The doctors here are mostly interns. Communication can be a problem with nurses/attendants if you don't speak good Thai.

More bad information.  There are many other public hospitals.

Misleading.  They have some of the best doctors in CM working there, people who teach at the CMU Medical School which is in the facility.

Maharaj Nakorn Ping, Lanna, Tempanya, Suan Prung, Rajavej, Central Chiang Mai - and that's public hospitals without going past the Superhighway or into Hang Dong.

You forgot CM Neurological Hospital up the road from Maharaj.

They have an general emergency room that's hardly ever used.

Lanna, Tepanya, Rajavej are not gov't (public) hospitals.  They are privately owned, with Lanna and Tepanya owned by the same group that owns CM Ram. 

 

Maharaj Nakorn Ping (Suan Dok, or CM University Hospital), Suan Prung psychiatric hospital and CM Neurological hospital are gov't hospitals.  So is the Geriatric Hospital on the road to Hang Dong.  Their definition of "Geriatric is pretty lose -- age 40 and above.  While Suan Prung and CM Neurological Hospital do have emergency rooms, I wouldn't consider them "general E/Rs"  For example, Suan Prung E/R is a great place to take someone who is in the midst of a full-blown, dangerous to himself and others mental health emergency, but not, say, a road crash victim.

I use Bangkok Hospital. But my insurance covers everything. Modern, clean, no waiting (most times!) and everyone speaks English.

Suan Prung is my favourite. Since I started treatment my urges have diminished. I'm now thinking of becoming a farang volunteer policeman.

For the most common ailments, is CM university hospital the only government hospital? We are not talking about specialised hospital such as psychiatric hospital.

 

CM Neuro is still in the same area as CM university hospital so I consider it as the same CM university hospital just different buildings.

 

Didn't know there is a geriatric hospital in Hang Dong. What do they provide that CM university hospital doesn't?

It's still considered part of Chiang Mai university hospital, just a different building such as dentistry or neurological, managed by the same Chiang Mai university administration at the topmost level.

 

I wouldn't consider it a different hospital.
