Wow! I want that hat.  Where can I buy it? ????

As to finding a phone and keeping it - sorry, that's simple theft, nothing else.  If I found a phone, I would (and have previously done so by posting it back to the tourist in China) do all I could to find the owner.

Clearly, some people live by a different moral code...

The moral to the story is: Mind your own business and leave the phone on the floor.

A very hard, and sanctimonious, view.

I doubt that there was any intent to steal...................... but as someone said, there may be more to the story.

Even to the point of not helping in an accident. Can easily get involved and suddenly become the villain in any scenario, here in the Land of Skullduggery

So what would you do,if you found the phone ?, keep it or try and find

the owner, maybe hand it into police,   seems like he did the former,

which is why he is been detained ,finding and keeping =stealing ,why

do you doubt there was any attempt to steal ?

One of the most lawless places found on planet earth!

There are actually tons and tons of laws, just none of them are adhered to by the good folk of Thailand.

Look up the definite of theft.

As I said, we don't know the full story but, no matter, you are happy to hang him without a trial.

Meet a Swedish guy that spent 1 year 8 months in the big house for "borrowing" a cell phone from a shop.

Did not get deported although after serving time.

What amazes me is how these youngsters can afford their " amazing adventure travelling in Asia" as his mother says on the go fund me page.

When I was that age I had to save for a year just for a weeks holiday travelling in my own country on the cheap.  Likely he still lives with mommy and daddy who feed him and keep a roof over his head.

The concept you are grappling for is commonly known as 'backpacking'.

I believe it's not uncommon for children and young people to live with their parents.

You could even get with it by exploring the term 'gap year'.????

Seems he may have achieved his dream of a life changing adventure.

Vilifying Farangs by jailing them for trivial offences while violent road rage incidents carried out by Thais go away with a 400bt fine. Getting more and more disillusioned with Thailand a country where I have to get a Visa every year for the rest of my life even though I have a Thai wife and kids.

Apply for PR or citizenship. Or take the family to a more friendly place. Possibly your home country.

I wouldn't trust that guy with a phone made out of legos.  I didn't realize you were stealing....sure, go to a store and try to find the owner.   Call numbers on the phone, if possible.  Maybe leave it at the store for a few weeks to see if it's tracked by the owner.  Then I would guess you can keep the phone, but now i'm thinking i'm wrong.
