The driver of a minivan carrying migrant workers away for the Songkran holidays said it was lucky that a canal was dried up after he was involved in a collision with a pick-up.

His van carrying about a dozen workers ended up half on its side and roof in the canal in Tha Muang district.

When police and immigration arrived on the scene they found 50 Myanmar and Mon workers, men women and their children, at the scene.

The van in the klong was the first of a convoy of four carrying the rubber trade workers from Surat Thani to catch a bus in Kanchanaburi bound for their home country for the holidays.

Driver Kiatsak, 25, was uninjured as were all of his passengers.

He claimed that he was hit from behind by a pick-up that emerged from an intersection causing him to lose control.

He said that people in the following three vans lent a hand but it was very lucky that the water in the klong was almost completely dried up.

Immigration officers on the scene found all the foreigners' papers to be in order.

The investigation into the cause of the crash continues at Tha Muang police station.

"He claimed that he was hit from behind by a pick-up that emerged from an intersection causing him to lose control."

if the pick up was emerging from an intersection, surely it would have hit him in the side ?

Maybe he thought there's been too many brake failure excuses ,better try something different.

That canal should get a medal for its brave act.

But I wonder, was not having 50 people in a van more newsworthy than the selflessness of the canal.

It was in a convoy.
