For now. Imagine how much capital a "visa-agent" would need to park 400K for every customer in a Bank year round.
Even if visa-agency has "somebody" at Immigration, you can't fake Bank-Statements covering the whole year /month by month. A seasoning of the money problem. Spot checks of of the files will reveal if money was in Bank year round. Not sure an Immi-Officer will risk his job, knowing that the funds haven't been in the Bank year round.
Knowing "Big joke", there will be some "controlling" once the new rules take hold. (Date-wise).
Immigration aren't looking as its been dealt with through an agency, so a non issue

i would just keep in mind what happened in Egypt under Nasser, and Uganda under Amin. One fine day they just told all foreigners that had to leave.....no ifs, buts, or maybe's. Many countries might start squawking about this if it happened here, but just look at Putin and his invasion of Crimea. What happened? Absolutely nothing. So keep that passport handy as you never know.

I always thought that too.

Forget collecting your 800k as you are escorted to the airport.

You forgot Cambodia under Pol Pot and VIetnam under Ho Chi Minh.

Not sure what happened to foreign owned holiday homes in Yugoslavia after the Serb/Croat war, nobody speaks about it.

Can you see the Thai government offering a "bailout" to a Thai bank, because they are deemed "too big to fail?"  I doubt it.

Nooooo, what the Thai government would do is change the visa laws to ensure foreigners must bring more money into the Thai banking system.  ????

Who has higher foreign exchange deposits.  UK, USA, Canada, Germany, Australia or Thailand?

Thailand fought a war to avoid the fate of Vietnam and Cambodia.  I wouldn't worry.  They won.

My question isn't about what can you afford.  My question is about what amount of money would you not be prepared to pay to remain here?  Eg. 1million, 1.5 million.

??

The 800, 000 is in a bank account in your name.  You are not "paying" anything....

Lets see what the new government can dream up. Glad I have a year to keep an eye on these people. Time to jump if they go any sillier.

Can't see that they have actually done anything that silly.  People have been getting round the rules, lying on affidavits using agents etc.  Now they are implementing stricter rules to catch the cheaters.  Not touching your 800k for 5 months of the year is a bit harsh but don't blame the authorities blame the people using tricks to beat the system.  As for the monthly income requirement, given the withdrawal of embassy confirmation letters, what else could they do?

I wouldn't pay more than the surrounding countries to stay here.

Around $300 seems the going rate, and that's with no address reporting, no border jumps/90 days, and no immigration hoops, just pay and stay.

That was years ago.  Thailands policy now is to align itself with China.  you have no rights here as a foreigner.  no due process.

i agree. charge a flat rate. very skittish about putting money in a third world bank as a foreigner.  not even if the interest rate was 10%. do your homework, too much of a gamble. rather play the lotto. who knows what the future may bring.  just saying.  not sure if the Banks would like it however.

what makes Thailand so special compared to other SEA countries? Bali, Vietnam gorgeous. great food.  in Vietnam people want to practice English with you.  forward thinking. ect.  you can walk into a Robinsons and not hunt for 20 minutes to find a sales clerk that can speak English

for me, its im done visa runs, if i can stay there without visa runs, its my place of choice.

for phil, if they have no power-outs, that will be my place of choice.

You should check the huge list of failed American banks! (Wiki will help)

In Chiang Mai, San Sai, had two power cuts in two weeks.

Used to be one a month during storms, now it's one a week at random.

your riff raff if you can't or do not wish to deposit 800K into a third world bank with a uncertain future and unstable currency?  also no one is on the same page at Immigration and the rules remain protean. good luck.  $$$ for me.

Instead of putting it into a third world bank (Somalia?) you could put it into a bank in Thailand. Actually I believe that is what the law demands.

This year ( Feb '19)  - 800k in the bank , and 300k "allowance"  for the 3 months the 800k  had to remain untouched ( I didnt always spend it all , but no way I was going under  800k ! ). Total about 1.1 million.  Zero interest.

Next year ( Feb '20 ) - 800k in the bank and 500k "allowance"  for the 5 months the 800k has to remain untouched.  ( I hope not to spend it , but no way Im going under 800k  !) Total about 1.3 million. Hopefully 1.5% interest.

But wait ! Theres more !!

400k  of this money  must stay  in a Thai bank  I can NEVER spend it ( unless I plan on leaving )  ?

1.7 million in the bank here ?

Sorry , Im not that enamoured .

The real issue for most of my friends and myself , is that we have Thai partners and a kid or 2 to take care of and those kids are not often our own.

I cant pick up and go to Indo or Vietnam and just leave them as their  fathers have before  , unwilling as I am to even deposit even 1 million in Thai  banks.

Most of us have decided to go the 65k ( or more ) route ... and all of us will be a month or 2 late on the 'proven 12 month of deposits rule' and just have to see what happens I guess.

So we  watch with interest/dread as to what is reported on this thread..

Then marry and stay on a marriage visa instead of a retirement visa. Can't be so hard.

That is quite out of context. The "war" was around 1800 ... when France tried to conquer Thailand and put it into "Indochine". Cambodia meanwhile is a Monarchy and democracy ... perhaps you missed that development and Vietnam is a communist democratic capitalist society just like China, but not as despotic.

There are only two lins in english. The hashtag and the name of the party. Hint: thai script is difficult to read, even for thais.

That is nonsense. No idea where this anti China propaganda comes from. Thailand has no real connections to China.

Maybe. A friend of mine has had a Bangkok law firm that specialises in Immigration matters handle all of his affairs including extensions for a number of years.  Occasionally he's had to go to CW with them, usually not
