Man coughs to death because of Chiang Mai smog, say locals

Locals in Chiang Mai told the Thai media they are convinced a man coughed himself to death in the smog clogged city.

Yat, 37, from Mae Ai was found dead in a shack in some vegetation in the downtown area. He had been dead for three days.

There were no signs of a struggle. An autopsy was ordered at Maharat Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital after Chang Pheuak police had completed formalities at the scene.

Locals told Sanook that Yat was a poor guy who worked in odd jobs locally. No one had seen him for a few days.

They said his shack was open to the elements and he would not have been able to afford a mask. They are convinced he coughed to death on smog particles perhaps exacerbating a preexisting condition.

Lots of people have been experiencing blood coming from their mouths and noses, they pointed out.

The city was reported for many days recently to have been the most polluted in the whole world.

Toenail what is your problem d no you like the pollution?

Actually, "Toenail" is quite right to draw attention to the veracity of the "report" and ask whether there were other potential contributory causes to this poor man's death. If he had been a long term smoker then lung cancer might have been partly responsible. He might have already suffered from COPD (Chronic OObstructive Pulmonary Disease), pneumonia, or perhaps emphysema. All or any of which might be revealed by the autopsy. There has been one report of a woman with a nose bleed (who let the blood stream into her mouth) because that made for a much more interesting photo. But "lots of people"...where's the evidence?

Of course, nobody likes or wants to live in a city where the air quality is so poor. It's simply naive of you (and others) to accept this report as having incontrovertible facts.

Regards,

Joe

Living in the conditions that this poor man did he probably had underlying symptoms, maybe exasperated by pollution possibly.

Wait for the autopsy report!

Living somewhere and the pollution is causing mouth and nose bleeding?

Chiang Mai is to be avoided as a permanent residence.

And not because of the pollution.
