"Look before you leap!" - Thai media offers tips to drivers

 

 

For many Thai drivers getting behind the wheel of a motor vehicle is a leap into the unknown.

 

The media column "Ruu Korn Yiap" (literally 'know before pressing' but translated here as "Look Before You Leap") is thus followed avidly by Thais wanting to know how on earth to drive. 

 

In the column's latest feature the public were given some handy tips on Daily News as to how to save money by lowering their gas bills.

It was true, they conceded, that modern cars have a variety of economy features but the following little known tips could significantly add to savings. And they were all easy to accomplish.

 

They were:

 

Don't press too hard on the accelerator.

 

Drive according to the prevailing conditions. 

 

Check you tire pressure.

 

Close the windows and the sun roof.

 

Lessen the weight carried in the car. 

 

Change the engine oil regularly according to manufacturers' specifications.

 

Do all these and your gas bills will plummet, said Daily News.

Little know tips !!  Bunch of total morons as what they have listed has been known and well publicised for decade after decade outside of Thailand. The best tip would be to suggest that Thai male drivers in particular remove their heads from their backsides whilst driving in order to see where they are going. Of course assuming they can see through the prolifera of superstitious rubbish they dangle from their rear view mirror  or stick on their dashboards.

First check is there a bigger pedal we call it a brake but most cars here don't seam to have this feature or the ability to operate one if it has????

You can see most drivers here still accelerate towards a red light knowing they still need to stop a minute or two after that. Me first metality at its best.

And the turn light indicators since they are not being used at all by most of the bar stuards.

Stop doing gas , brake,  gas, brake,  gas , brake,  just take  your damn foot  off  the accelerator  to slow  down and its  much easier when you aren't 1  metre from the  vehicle in front.

Never  going to happen though.

Many already removed the bumpers,much better to replace whole  body  panels in a bump and re  paint than swap out  that "pesky"  bumper !

Last Sunday on my way back to Bangkok from Chonburi had to go through a traffic jam on Motorway 7 caused by a 6 vehicle pile up. You didn't need to spend much time figuring out how that may had happened.

Mine, Mitsubishi Lancer doesn't have a sun roof. Offered as an extra, declined.

I doubt the writer lives in England (or do you mean UK?) because nationals of those countries know the difference between petrol, diesel and gas (LPG, NGV etc).

I've adjusted to Thai traffic. I just assume everyone on the roads wants to kill me, and drive accordingly. I'm trying to spite them.

This is all fine and dandy but the reason death and accident continues after the fact is not going to reduce the problem fast enough it has to be taught right from the get go and that is put it in the beginner handbook and then make sure every driving school puts it into part of the training on paper and in practice.  This is another example that Thai leader don't get it and making these type of suggestion just give us more fuel to bash the hell out of you guys?

They should rather give the "tip" to the Thai Police.....something that says  "honestly enforce the law (for driving and vehile maintenance) and don't just look to make a fast bribe buck and close your eyes on road delinquents, should they be Thai or farangs".

Here is one more tip they forgot to mention:

Take a loooong vacation fly to far and distant shores and figure out what's behind the miraculous thing the pesky farangs call "common sense".

• When entering an intersection, close your eyes and accelerate.
• When pulling out of a side street onto a thoroughfare, look to the far left of the road and accelerate without looking to see if a vehicle is about to kill you.  You're Buddha amulets with protect you.
• When entering an intersection where the light has been red for 10 seconds, accelerate.
• If on a motorcycle and a car is attempting to pass you when you are traveling at 30 kph and the car is traveling at 70 kph, move from the shoulder into the middle of the lane where the car has the right-of-way and pretend you don't see the car.  When the car has passed you, return to the shoulder.
• While traveling on a four-lane divided highway and you want to make a U-turn, simply drift across the two left lanes and expect that the cars traveling at 80 to 120 kph will yield to you even though it's your responsibility to safely yield and then cross the high-speed lanes, preferably by merging using techniques that virtually any 18 year old Western learned in school.  If you're killed, don't feel bad - a handful of ignorant farangs on TV will side with your stupidity.
• When you want to get home without driving 1/2 km out of your way to the the U-turn, just drive the wrong way down the road.  Everyone need to get out of your way, and if a farang kills you, your family is set for life.
• If you come to a U-turn on a divide highway, and you need to drive 1/4 km down the highway to get to the gas station - go for it - everyone need to get out of your way.  And if you're killed by a farang - well, see above.
• If you are a policeman in a patrol car, and see an infraction - it's none of your business, so ignore it.
  
  I could go on - but why.  I've live here over a decade - I've seen it, I see it every day.
  I don't drive like that, but I'm very aware of the morons who do - which are a whole lot of ignorant people.  Then why is there any confusion as to why Thailand is either the Number 1 Most Dangerous Roads to drive on - or within the top three or four.  Ain't gonna change.  No one really cares.
