The severe drought that has led to the Yom River drying up prompted residents in Tambon Sam Ngam of Phichit’s Sam Ngam district to join with local officials in building a temporary mid-river check dam.

The structure aims to slow the flow and catch water for use both for consumption and farming.

The two-metre-tall check dam - made of bamboo tubes erected in rows across the river on top of a pressure-resisting foundation made of cement pipe and 3,000 sandbags - is being built in Wang Look Chang (Moo 8).

Many of the shallower parts of the Yom River, which runs through four districts of Phichit province, namely Sam Ngam, Pho Prathap Chang, Bung Narang and Pho Thale, have dried up, exposing the riverbed.

And everyone else down stream goes dry.

Its not the Hoover Dam. It’s a check dam. These help counteract erosion by reducing flow velocity.
