Vigo - Fuel Filter Or Fuel Gauge Issue?

Featured Replies

Over the past 6 months, my Vigo keeps stopping as if it has run out of diesel, when the fuel gauge shows between 20-40% full.

I have replaced the fuel filter 3 times and had the whole system flushed 3 times also.

The issue still persists and I'm starting to think that the fuel gauge may be faulty, and I'm actually running out of diesel.

Has anyone else had this problem, how would I go about checking the fuel gauge.

Thanks in advance.

Fill the tank up to the top, then look at the gauge....Your ride does about 10km to the litre, the tank holds (I think) 76 litres, so, in theory you should be good for 700+ Km, keep a record of Km from the speedo and see what the gauge is doing..

If your fuel tank has an in-tank pump, do not let the fuel level fall below half a tank. this keeps the whole pump assembly cooler, ensuring a longer life.

Also, your fillup cost is cut in half !

Dose it happen when you have just put Fuel in? If not could well be your gauge. Tank sender. Keep the tank well loaded with fuel for a time, if you don't get any problems it's got to be your gauge. Or more than likely the sender is sticking and will need replacing. Easy way to check is to fill up your tank and see how much it takes. As T/A said it's around 76lt if it takes a large amount more than the 20/40% you state your gauge reads you have a gauge problem.

Check too that the fuel tank cap inward vent is not blocked. The fuel pump cannot pull against a partial vacuum.

If the Vigo stops while showing fuel is still in the tank, jack it up and undo the fuel tank line. Allow to drain into a bottle. No fuel, gauge problem. Fuel present, filter or fuel pump problem.

Is the Vigo gasoline or diesel? Most gasolines are water tolerant, due to their ethanol content. Diesel AFAIK is not. Fuel filters do not like water.

The Vigo has a dash warning light regarding water in fuel..The fuel filter housing has a water trap which the onboard tech keeps an eye on....

So each time it stopped you filled up with fuel, bled the filter and engine ran?

If that was all you did each time then it probably is just fuel starvation from low tank level

Do you not know how many miles you are getting between each fill up? Try just keeping the tank above half full for a month and see if it stops again

If it doesn't stop then it's the gauge....

No there is no cost saving, you just have to fill up twice as often. My car averages 33 mpg and has a 12.5 gal fuel tank capacity and I drive 300-330 miles between fill-ups. Have never pumped more than 38L into the tank.

Low tank fuel level was NEVER a ploblem with my Vigo over the 11 plus years I owned it....????

Ah , dash warning lights. Also called idiot lights, because you're an idiot if you ignore them. But what happens if the warning light itself is out of commission?

Sounds more like the electric fuel pump or the relay which provides power for it, is problem same with a full tank of fuel, or maybe problem with fuel pickup line in fuel tank.

How many liters it takes to become full shows how much fuel left in the tank when it stops. Easy to estimate how much fuel left in the tank at the time, or no fuel at all.

Faulty pump could cause problem even could cause damage to pump relay contacts.

Did you see the exclamation mark ?

I saw no need for further explanation - or to be pedantic

The dash warning light comes on when you turn the ignition on, when you start the engine it goes out if all is well....????

That dash light has a few functions, it can do a few different signals which the handbook explains...

Vigo doesn't have an electronic pump it has one driven by a cam. Sits to the right hand side of block.

Snap of said Pump that's off a 2.8lt engine but the early 3lt Vigo ones were much the same.

I believe it has an electric feed pump...

Correct forgot about that.

That doesn't answer my question, Trans. How many people without OCD do you think would notice if a dash warning light did not come on when the ignition key was turned on?

ALL the dash lights come on when the ignition is switched on.....In turn they go out when the system checks all is OK....The fuel system is covered IF the fuel system dash light initially comes ....If folk don't want to glance at start up stuff that is up to them....BUT, if the fuel system has a prob the yellow dash light will stay on...

Now if you are saying the dash lights are idiot lights cos idiots never look at them then that is their ploblem...

But twice as often. Dooooh.

Now now. Not everyone has your grasp of complex math.

I'm saying if the dash light doesn't come on because the globe/LED or whatever is on the fritz, what then?

The yellow dash light won't stay on if it's not working to begin with.

Dear Heaven, how did such a simple question become so complicated?

Has the fuel indicator got a few dots at the base? If so you need to bleed the fuel/water filter. The filter separates moisture from the fuel (diesel). Black box to the right of the engine block.

If the dash light doesn't come on when the ignition is turned on then a visit to Toyota is required...????

The handbook has a page showing all of your idiot lights with there positions and meanings.
