I expect the word mortgage may not fit exactly.

Correct.  No bank involved.  Land used as security for loan sharks to pay for the journey.

I think this is why some families are being given their money back, not out of guilt, but out of keeping their business going.

Just so tragic, yet, so common.

May they rest in peace.

How about condo ownership in Danang for foreigners? Do they have freehold?

I looked into, briefly.

Rent, don't buy, is the best advice for foreigners in South East Asia.

Vietnam offers a similar style of ownership as Thailand, but for 50 years, not 30 years.

The problem is, Pattaya only really had one vibe, and will all know what that was, but Pattaya is now being promoted as having many different vibes to attract a variety of markets.

The other vibes they are promoting are now attracting the majority of tourists here, so Pattaya's traditional vibe is dying, and many will be left with worthless businesses and property here in the future.

Yes the demise of Pattaya is depressing. Foreign couples pushing prams around is a real vibe killer. I dont want a 'family' resort!

Hello.  Did you see the report on the BBC that one of the deceased's family mortgaged their land to raise the money for the journey?

Do you really think the $60,000AUD was savings in a bank?

If they had that sort of money in a bank, they could have got a legitimate visa and got a flight to the UK and then just overstayed.

No they couldnt. Anyway many dont have passports and passport holders and their families are monitored by the Vietnamese secret police

Yes but in Thailand condos have freehold ownership so if condos only get a 50 years term in Vietnam  then Thailand offers more on the condo market. but Thailand gives less on their housing lease market. Just 30 years house land  lease while Vietnam 50 years house land lease.

In that scenario for condos in Vietnam renting is better.

I see the humor in your post, but do you think the couples pushing prams spend the same amount as the tourists that Pattaya traditionally attracted?

A Vietnam passport costs about $9USD.  This is not cost prohibitive, even for poorer Vietnamese.

Price at 2017.  I doubt much more now.

Not really understand what u mean..

How u know how it is when not yet visited? What u liked about Saigon? Are u talking about Pattaya is Pattaya because it has some girly bars with noisy <deleted> music?

u worry DaNang doesn’t have such features for u?

I have not been to Da Nang but I have read about it and my friends have told me about it. It sounds grim. Pattaya is fun city with a massive variety of mixed nightlife and entertainment. From you comment you did not experience all that Pattaya offers which is a lot more than 'some girly bars with noisy <deleted> music'.

Ask yourself this question, "Do you own the land your condo sits on in Thailand?"

If you are honest with yourself, you will see 50 years is a better deal.

Probably that farang condo owns that land for 49%  at most. But freehold is basically lifelong while 50 years isn’t always lifelong.

You obviously have no understanding of how communists police states operate. Nor how difficult it is to access a passport office for a peasant living miles away from the city. Only the ultra rich well connected Vietnamese travel abroad.

The feared Vietnamese Secret Police control people's lives, infiltrate all aspects of Vietnamese society and run rings of informers spying on each other. They are modelled on the STASI.

There is only one Pattaya in the world.

If what Pattaya is famous for is the main reason for you staying here, then I accept you should not look anywhere else for anything similar, because you will never find it.

Pattaya is famous for what Pattya became famous for, and we all know what that is.

However, times change, people change, laws change, currencies change etc etc.

Everyone needs a Plan B to Pattaya and Thailand.

What's yours?

There is no freehold for foreigners, as we know it in the west, in Thailand.

I invite you to try your hardest to post how 49% of foreign owned, against 51% of Thai owned, somehow equals 100% freehold ownership for foreigners.

Perhaps you are the reason your friends left.  The key to enjoying Pattaya is leaving there frequently to travel around Thailand then returning to have fun. However,  Foreigners who use the term farang to describe themselves rarely have much to offer and lack credibility. How was Vietnam BTW? Was Danang as good as Pattaya?

I travel around Thailand especially Issan. I travel around Europe, hang out in London. Visit Spain, Portugal, the Balkans. But I am based in Pattaya because it the most interesting city in Thailand,  the only cosmopolitan city left in Thailand and typifies the true, real, free, mai pen lai Thai style and fun way of life.

Coming from someone who has never even been to Danang, yet claims to know how communist police states operate, I appreciate your sense of humor.  ????

How about you go to Danang and then post on this thread.

Until then, what are your thoughts on the governance of Thailand?

The individually condo unit can be owned freehold for foreigners but not its land for foreigners.
