cancelling a work visa at border

Featured Replies

I've just finished my contract at a Thai school and they want to cancel the work permit. If its cancelled and I let immigration know, they will cancel the work visa in my passport and i will have to leave the country the same day. Is it possible that I can just take my passport and cross the border and cancel the work visa in my passport that way instead?

You can go to immigration a couple of days before the date on a termination letter from your employer and they will post date the cancellation to that day so that you have time to leave.

Some border crossings will not you leave the country until your extension is canceled and others will want to see the termination letter in order for you to leave the country.

You should get it done here; some officers might send you back to get a letter of cancellation of your contract and your work permit that tells them when an eventual overstay starts.

I'd also make sure to have a tax clearance receipt; they could ask for it if you didn't do that they can deny departure. Should it be too late, you can get a one-week extension of stay at the local Immigration to buy you some time for 1,900 baht.

I have never heard of that happening at any border crossing. I am not even sure you can get such a tax clearance.

The requirement for a tax clearance certificate died in the early 2000's.

Could I get my termination letter a couple of months before changing to a marriage extension? Or when I go to immigration, should the letter be recent, ie days?

I am not sure about using one that old. Never heard of anybody trying it. A week or two may be OK.

It died in 1991.

It was in the early 90s, if I remember correctly.
