WINDSOR, England (Reuters) - Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife Meghan showed off their newborn son to the world on Wednesday, saying the arrival of their “little bundle of joy” was magic.

Tightly cradling his son, wrapped in a white shawl and wearing a hat, Harry and Meghan appeared before a small group of media at St George’s Hall in Windsor castle where they held their wedding reception just under a year ago.

“It’s magic - it’s pretty amazing and I have the two best guys in the world so I am really happy,” said a beaming Meghan, wearing a white sleeveless coat dress, when asked how she was finding being a new mother.

She said the boy, the seventh-in-line to the British throne who has not yet been publicly named, was calm, had the sweetest temperament and was sleeping well.

“He’s just been the dream,” she said, prompting Harry to quip: “I don’t know who he gets that from”.

The baby was born in the early hours of Monday morning, weighing 7 lb 3oz (3.26 kg), but few other details have been given about the birth.

“It’s great, parenting is amazing,” Harry said. “It’s only been two-and-a-half days, three days, but we’re just so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy, to be able to spend some precious time with him as he slowly starts to grow up.”

The couple said they were about to visit 93-year-old Elizabeth, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, at the castle to allow her to meet her eighth great-grandchild.

Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland is also staying with the couple at their home Frogmore Cottage, on the castle’s estate.

“It will a nice moment to introduce the baby to more family and my mum’s with us as well,” Meghan, 37, said.

Britain’s royal family attracts huge fascination and there is particular interest in Harry and former U.S. actress Meghan, who are officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

A BRITISH AND U.S. CITIZEN?

Given their worldwide popularity, the birth of their first child has attracted particular attention, especially as the new child is first mixed race child to be born into a senior position in British royalty in recent history.

He is also entitled to hold U.S. citizenship while also automatically being a British national. However, the baby will not automatically be a prince or a princess, or be known as “His Royal Highness”, unless the queen issues a specific decree.

Congratulations to the new parents have poured in from celebrities and world leaders.

Harry’s father, the heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles expressed his joy at the arrival of his fourth grandson on Tuesday, while elder brother Prince William and his wife Kate said they were absolutely thrilled at the news.

“Thank you all so much, and thank you everybody for all the well-wishes and the kindness, it just means so much,” Meghan said.

Some commentators have argued that the birth marks another milestone in the gradual modernisation of the almost thousand-year-old monarchy.

“You are the first child in almost three centuries to bring Africa back into the royal gene pool,” Trevor Phillips, the former head of Britain’s Equality and Human Rights Commission, wrote in an open letter to the newborn.

“You are seventh in line to the throne — and everything you bring with you will now be part of the public life of our nation.”

However, not everyone has been happy with the way the couple have handled the publicity around the birth and how much information has been given to the media.

Harry has never made a secret of his dislike of the press since his mother Princess Diana was killed in a crash in 1997 as her car sped away from chasing photographers.

“Choosing a U.S. Network ... is treading on dodgy ground,” the queen’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter wrote on Twitter about the decision to have a U.S. TV crew in the small group invited to cover Wednesday’s event.

However, Harry was more than happy to help out the media as he showed off his baby, cracking a joke as he pulled back the blanket to allow cameras to get a better look at his son.

“He’s already got a little bit of facial hair as well - wonderful,” joked the bearded prince.

Archie?! American comic book character, and now the latest British royal

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Archie, the red-headed comic book character? Or Archie Bunker, American television's bad-tempered bigot from the 1970s?

The choice of Archie as the name for Britain's newest royal baby sent social media into a tailspin on Wednesday and confused Americans who associate the name with two of the nation's biggest pop culture figures, and their pets.

The #Archie hashtag became the top trending item on Twitter soon after Prince Harry and his American wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, announced they were naming their two-day-old son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

While Archie is one of the 20 most popular names for baby boys in Britain, it is not widely used for American children.

In the United States, where Meghan Markle was born and raised, thoughts tend to go to Archie Andrews, the popular red-headed all American teenager who made his debut in Archie Comics in 1941 as a high school football player whose best friend is called Jughead Jones. His stories have been adapted for television in the current teen drama series "Riverdale."

"I'm baby," Archie Comics posted on its official Twitter account, minutes after the name was announced.

"They named #BabySussex Archie. This will all make more sense if he has red hair," Canadian horror fiction writer Susie Moloney said in a Twitter post, apparently referring to Harry's red hair and adding a cartoon picture of the smiling comic book character.

A user called Northlondonhippy tweeted that the royal baby was "now the second most famous Archie in the world."

Many Americans also recall the less likeable Archie Bunker from the 1970s television comedy series, "All in the Family." Played by actor Carroll O'Connor, Bunker was a gruff, blue collar worker with a habit of making racist and misogynist remarks but who became a popular character dubbed a "lovable bigot."

"The only Archie I ever knew. Ugh!" tweeted a user called royalbabyboomer, with a picture of Bunker.

For others, Archie is better known as a popular name for cats and dogs.

"This is our Archie when he was a baby, 7 years ago," tweeted a user named chipeater, next to a video of his labrador puppy.

Researchers quickly came up with the meanings behind the names.

People magazine said Archie is an abbreviation for Archibald, which means genuine, bold and brave. Harrison means "son of Harry" and Mountbatten was the name of the late uncle of Harry's grandfather, Prince Philip.

Nevertheless, many users on social media remained unimpressed.

"Archie is a comic book name, how can they be so stupid? Poor kid," tweeted a user called Outrider32.

  • Older UK citizens may remember Archie Andrews, the ventriloquist's dummy operated by Peter Brought in the famous radio series Educating Archie in the 1950s.

Archie is also the shortened form of the name Archibald, derived from medieval Germanic words "erchan" meaning genuine or precious and "bald" meaning bold.

Short for Archibald. He will be addressed as Your Royal Highness or "Sir" regardless of his name.

His immediate family and a few very close friends will call him Archie.

I'm gunna call him Archie. Just sayin'.

When I previously read about their marriage..I got the impression that, wow, there are quite allot of racists coming out in that country or at least 'bothered' by her ethnicity, being in a 'royal family' and all...

But isnt there German blood in that 'royal family'?
