Anyone else tried the Brave web browser?

With Google getting ready to shut down the ad blocking extensions on the Chrome browser, I decided to look around for a replacement. The one that came out on top on a coupe of reviews I read was the Brave browser. I'm giving it a try and so far it looks like an improvement over Chrome. Without all the ads pages load noticeably faster. Plus, since it is built on the Chromium platform, the extensions I use, e.g. 1Password, work just fine. No need to add the ad blocker extensions since ad blocking is built into the browser. You can turn it off if you are addicted to watching ads. LOL

So, has anyone else tried the Brave browser? What have you experienced with it?

Hi,
I just downloaded Brave last week because a cryptocurrency exchange I'm registered with - Coinbase - were offering some free BAT tokens if I watched a few videos and installed Brave. To be honest, I only tried it for the cryptos (worth about £8) but I actually quite liked it when I started using it. Brave definitely loads pages faster than Chrome and it's great at blocking ads.
The videos I watched on CoinbaseEarn made it seem like I could get paid in Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) for watching ads, but when I started using Brave it seems that part of it isn't up and running yet. I still like it though. It definitely won't be my only browser - I still need Internet Explorer to do my 90-day reporting online - but I'm glad to have found it.
If/when this BAT-for-ads thing kicks off, I think Brave will catch on. I think that's what Facebook is trying to develop with it's rumored GlobalCoin (rewards for ad views) and I definitely think that long term, that's a fairer way to reward people for the time they spend seeing ads.

Been using Brave for three weeks now. Before I was using Vivaldi, which my PC doesn't seem to like, and Vivaldi is becoming increasingly obscure with what for me are unnecessary updates.

Brave is fine, it's just a browser the way you would want it.

Thanks. I've only been using it a couple of days but like what I have seen.

I tried Brave, and for a while it seemed great, fast, no ads, all the hype seemed good.

Then my Citi online banking threw a wobbler, not really certain it was Brave but (after talking to customer support) went back to Chrome and all is right with the world.

Brave has been removed.

Interesting to note. Luckily I do all my banking through the banks' apps so not a problem and more secure.

I have two small problems with it so far.  It is so close to Chrome that it can be hard to tell which one I'm using.  The other is that all my Viagra and penal length increaser adds are no longer viable.

I can not get Brave to do automatic translate feature like in Chrome. The setting that is Chrome is not in Brave which is

"Offer to translate pages that aren't in a language you read"

This is a very important feature for me and maybe a deal breaker.

I added a translator extension but with that I have to highlight the text and select translate.

Anything is better than Chrome, I would not let it near any of my computers, but yes, I find Brave very good, although my default browser is Opera.

Brave does not allow signing in to Facebook. Something to do with Java Script. Looks like I am just   going to uninstall it.

I couldn't get Barclays online banking to work properly with Brave.  Logged on OK but then just got the spinny thingy and couldn't get any further.  I seem to recall that there was a similar problem using Chromium, on which, apparently, Brave is based.  Works fine with Chrome.

No harm in using more than one browser.  My bank too has a finicky website that prefers Chrome, so I use it for just that and hardly anything else.  I have several browsers installed on my PC, it can be handy, especially for all the assorted video streams out there that require particular player software.

I'll give Brave a try if I can find a portableapps version.

Been using it for about a year (I think). I also occasionally have some issues with financial log ins but not sure if browser or VPN. New users should make sure they go through the settings in detail and check back occasionally to make sure they haven't changed......

The main issue there is still a lot of work in progress on it which you will see if you peruse some of the brave community or github threads.

On Win 7 on one pc it takes a while to first initiate but once running it seems very quick. I put up with the clunkiness of these issues because it appears to be more privacy oriented then most. Guess it depends how important that is to you..........

  • 2 weeks later...

Have just started trying it and it seems very good on most sites I use. Only problem seems to be with Piratebay which I use on Google Chrome with bittorrent and can choose where I want the downloads to go. So far I cannot find how to do this with Brave. Any ideas?

Absolute rubbish if you want to download from Movies123 or similar.

It keeps on showing "No Internet" regularly when I try to download movies from Movies123.

Not sure as do not use torrents but have you gone into Settings - Additional Settings - Downloads?

You can set a standard download folder and set it to ask each time.

Why are you interested in ads that will increase your prison sentence?
