Cannot connect headphones with UDB C to iPad Pro

Upgraded to a new iPad Pro and bought an adaptor (USB C to 3.5mm jack) and a pair of new headphones with USB C connector but cannot get them to play through the earphones and does not mute sound from the iPad.

Anyone have this problem or solve it for me,
