National Safety Month - The Dangers of Distracted Driving

More than 90% of car accidents involve human error. While cell phones and navigation devices are often the culprit when it comes to distracted driving, conventional distractions, such as interacting with passengers and eating, also contribute. Did you know:

  • The largest cause of distracted driving crashes — by 62 percent — is a driver being lost in thought or letting their mind wander.

  • One in four drivers used a cell phone right before they were involved in a crash.

  • Dialing a phone increases a driver's chance of crashing by 12 times.

  • Texting while driving increases the risk of crashing by 23 times.

  • The maximum amount of time a driver can safely divert their attention from the road is two seconds. It takes a driver five seconds, on average, to send a text message

It would need to be in the form of a soap opera/cartoon or nobody would pay the slightest attention!

I would say they mean falling asleep at the wheel.

The rest is obvious it's an offence to drive and use a mobile in UK and you could still get penalised by TP for using hands free devices.

Even hands free phone used in driving is considered a distraction and new research suggests all phones should be banned from cars, whether or not they are actually being held by the person.
