Intention to marry in Thailand

Featured Replies

Good evening,

Little background information. I`ve been together with my Thai girlfriend now for 4 years. We both met abroad. Were together for 2 years before she finished her studies and moved back to Thailand. We are still together and are intending to get married in Thailand. From what I have read online, I require a 90-day non-immigrant visa to be able to marry in Thailand. I`d like to know if this is true or not as from what I`ve read you need to show a marriage certificate. Can you get this visa type on the premises of the intention to marry?

Regards,

This visa is for people who are married already.

You just get a tourist visa (or arrive without and get a 30 day visa exempt, if you are from a country which qualifies for it) and get marrried.

More likely the other way round, I think: you'll need to be married to a Thai national in order to be eligbile for a single- or multi-entry non-immigrant "O" visa on the basis of marriage from a Royal Thai embassy or consulate in an adjoining or nearby SE Asian country. Savannakhet in PDR Laos has been mentioned as a popular destination of choice for those seeking such visas in countless threads on here.

But, before you can marry your girlfriend in Thailand, you will need to have obtained from your home country's embassy in Bangkok an affirmation of freedom to marry document.

There is no visa requirement to register a marriage here. It can even be done with a visa exempt entry.

As said marriage requires:

1.  Obtain freedom to marry document from your Embassy and fill out and have them sign - requirements vary but normally just your word but if previously married other paperwork may be required.

2.  Have translated into Thai and registered with MFA (translation agency can register normally).

3.  Visit a district office and marry.  There can be issues with some wanting extra documents such as passport confirmation or wait for MFA check of paper but it can be done at any district office so might have to try another.

OJAS is correct but obtaining the document can be a real pain in the ass. UK embassy in Bangkok operate a crazy appointment system that if you are lucky you will get an appointment for Consular services some 60 days from booking. You will then have to get the English language doc translated into Thai before submission to the Thai Government department that deals with foreign affairs for their approval stamp. You then need to go to the Anfur where your G/F is registered and find out their specific requirements about what documentation and witnesses are required for signing the docs. Then you can get married and the troubles begin. It is quite a time consuming and a lengthy procedure.
