Samut Prakan monk makes ‘nano-robes’ from recycled plastic bottles

After three years of trials, Pra Maha Pranom, who is the assistant abbot of Wat Chak Daeng temple in Thailand’s Samut Prakan province, has successfully produced what he calls a “nano-robe”, made from a mixture of recycled plastic, cotton and zinc oxide nanoparticles.

The robe is the result of Pra Maha Pranom’s lifelong pursuit of hygienic perfection. He has always disliked the sight of dirty garbage and wanted to find ways to get rid of it. To learn more about recycling, Phra Maha Pranom went on study tours overseas and spent three years on experimentation.

Recently he created a working formula for mixing recycled plastic with cotton and zinc oxide nanoparticles to make a fine, high quality fabric. Perhaps understandably, the first items of clothing he produced were the iconic saffron coloured monks’ robes.

It sounds like he's trying hard to help the environment. However, I can't stop thinking of the phrase 'robo-monk'.

I take my hat off to him. I still think this whole issue needs government intervention, let governments say "in 5 years from today liquid containers that do not biodegrade quickly and safely will be banned". The "market" will come up with an innovative solution to this whole problem IMHO.

zinc oxide is used in sun screen cremes and paste for fake teeth and people often get toxic effects from those

villa market almost don't give plastic bags anymore, but did not not promote is long ago it was bio degradable ? so what is the problem ? money ?

saying now, no plastic bags to save the environment and a few weeks/months later = 1 or 2 baht per PLASTIC BAG ...

So Thailand is running short of plastic bottles...:whistling:

At present, a large quantity of plastic bottles is pouring into the temple for nanofabric production, but it is not enough to meet the demand, from temple goers and merit makers, for the “nano-robes”.

However, great idea, thumbs up...????

Yes. Like glass reusable bottles that worked fine for a few hundred years

Hmmm proceed with caution over that .. Has a lot of applications does Zinc Oxide nano particles but it's effects on health has yet to be fully quantified which is why some manufacturers are reluctant to include it in package information ..

At last an honest monk... well done.

The skeptic in me wonders if he will still be a monk this time next year; especially, if someone is willing to pay him for his "invention".

Plastic bottles have been recycled into fleece material for a long time. So not really ground breaking.
