Pattaya: Oops! Cops extorted son of top policeman in e-cigarette sting

Caption: Disgraceful!

Four bent policemen chose the wrong person to extort in an e-cigarette bust in Pattaya.

The victim turned out to be the son of a senior police colonel in the north east of Thailand.

After he was picked up and 40,000 baht was demanded he was released and went straight to the Pattaya police.

Now the chief of the Chonburi provincial police has ordered that the book is thrown at the bent cops.

Yesterday Phanuwat Suban Na Ayuthaya, 24, reported the extortion to Pol Capt Thanin Kanphai.

He said that he had been contacted by a man to meet him at a South Pattaya gas station as he wanted to buy two sets of e-cigarette smoking materials. A price of 1,250 baht was agreed.

It turned out to be a police sting. Four men who identified themselves as Region 2 police (Division 4) bundled him into a black Toyota police pick-up and drove him away.

On the journey one in the pick-up said that they would release him if he paid them 40,000 baht. Phanuwat said he didn't have that kind of cash and it was agreed that he would hand over his one baht weigh gold bracelet (worth about 20,000 baht) and 5,000 baht in cash.

They then let him go at the end of soi 13/2 on Beach Road.

Phanuwat's claim that they were police was investigated as CCTV was examined at the sites of the alleged extortion.

It turned out to be completely true. A police captain was in charge of the four men.

Pol Maj-Gen Nanthachart Suphamonkhon, the provincial police commander, has ordered that the four men face the full force of police disciplinary procedures.

Daily News reported that Phanuwat is the son of a police colonel who is a deputy commander in Isaan.

Phanuwat was previously charged with selling electronic cigarettes back in September 2016.

More on what the "full force of police disciplinary procedures" actually means as we hear of it.

Now this is the sort of thread that I like. Bent cops getting nailed! Shame there aren't hundreds more every day, but the fact that these four are being done is a good start to my day.

so a criminal was extorted by bent cops, I would say that's quits.   Hand shakes all around and go back to being criminal and corrupt.

Cynical me. Shouldn't that be 'if we hear of it'?

Won't they just wait until the dust settles and then do no more?

To be honest I am puzzled as to why it was not handled internally by the father and he felt the need to go public?

yes whatever will happen to the 4 cops but he is selling prohibited items so he too will be charged and prosecuted and most likely heavily fined.

i guess thinking 2 steps ahead was not part of the plan.

i bet i could go out today in Pataya and buy e cigarettes of i so choose to do so, (non smoker) i think this guy was a bit of a fool to go down that route, i suppose that will be 4 more inactive postings. and the crunch line is *do you know who my dad is* well they do now, oops

What about the kid who broke the law and has previous for the same offence?

The extortion was a bit excessive, but seeing as he had 1baht of gold in full view,

they probably thought he was worth a few quid.

It was such extortion that paid for all the finer things in life he grew up with. Now he complains!

But only because they were earning and not passing it up and only because the perp was connected. Nothing more to it. Taking care of their own.

Good point, he should face the full force of the law, the fact that his daddy is a senior policeman should not come in to it.

Could well be the different jurisdiction. The Thai police is strictly vertical. Neighbouring police jurisdictions may have no interaction at all. A police colonel from Isaan would have to go up to the common managerial level (National HQ) and then it would have to go down to Chonburi. Otherwise Chonburi would take no notice.

Or

Take it public and then things happen.

At 6 feet tall and 24 years of age, he's hardly a kid, but with a NA me like his, the sky's the limit.  (Do you know who my father is?" type of guy.)

He doesnt have previous for the same offence as I read it.

He previously sold them. This time he bought one.

I certainly wouldnt call him a criminal for e cigs. Surely the police have better things to do in pattaya than worrying about a guy buying e cigs.

Could be read both ways due to the "reporting".

I read it as he was selling, guy gets in touch to buy a couple, they meet and then they pick him up  i.e. a sting rather than entrapment.

"The victim turned out to be the son of a senior police colonel in the north east of Thailand."

Could we see a photo of colonel's house he bought on police salary? His (and probably son's) cars etc?

I've been getting things wrong, I thought there was dual standards between Thai's and Farangs but it turns out to be triple standards, Rich or connected Thai's, Normal Thai's, then Farangs, however, we are still at the bottom..!!!

Question :- What is the name of the largest criminal organization in Thailand ? ............. ????

So the kid selling illegal stuff goes to the cops what will happen to the kid probably nothing TIT

I get your point but it's a bit like rejoicing when a drug mule is arrested.

You should reserve your happiness for the day - if ever - when the big boys go down.
