Is there any reason you didn't go to immigration ?

The reason I ask is that I am exiting the country from one port and coming back in from another and will be staying away from home for a week. The immigration officer told me to go to the police station at the port away from my home and to get a letter from them and then bring it to them as soon as I return.

The above said, is that the TM30, as I am staying at a hotel I would have thought that they would take care of that, very confusing this TM 30

I thought that you could only use a police station if there wasn't an immigration office in your province?

Posted on this subject a little while ago.

Not too confident, in the current climate, that could be done in the future.

Good to know, but I wouldn’t count on it hitting the immigration record. Make sure you keep the receipt.

... and that's the way it should be. Udon Immi. sounds sensible in this matter, as Khon Kaen has been.

Your local cops and immigration are all parts of the Thai Police - it should be mandatory that the local police station accepts TM30 reports and issues receipts that are then accepted by Immigration. In addition to the obvious advantages to us - police stations are usually MUCH closer than Immi. offices (300m v. 70+ km in my case) and so making the report within 24 hours is fairly easy - it'd also mean the local cops are aware of foreigners living locally and perhaps lead to the home visits that are sometimes mentioned becoming a thing of the past.

All 90 day reporting should be allowed at the police station nearest you, as opposed to a distant immigration office and or by mail

I was told by Ubon Immigration that it can not be done at a police station because the police computers are not connected to the Immigration system and that the posters that are plastered on the wall are out of date as is the 40 year old law.....that was their words.

If it is true that a receipt from a Police Station is accepted by Immigration then why does it matter about connected computers? Maybe one can post a copy of the receipt from the Police to the Immigration Office if far away. They can receive in 48 hours but know that reporting was done in 24 hours - if that is the bag they are into.

I think that the TM30 is not a 24 hour surveillance system and seems to me to be no more than a general guide for Immigration about foreigners moving around!

I personally, haven't filed a TM30 in 16 years. But I understand there is a greater risk nowadays from stricter enforcement so maybe I have to change my position on this!

I agree, TM 30 rules are old and not updated. I think  the 1979 rules still mention that it can be done at police station.

THe IO should know that.

As I live 70+ kilometer from my provincial Immigration Office (SiSaKet), I filled in a TM-30 and went with it to a near-by police station.  They date-stamped and signed the report and handed it back to me, done in 3 minutes.  No copies were made and I am pretty sure they did not record it anywhere.  Obviously that's not the intent of the whole TM-30 procedure, but fine for me as I have proof that I reported my stay.  Since SiSaKet provincial Immigration Office does not enforce TM-30 reporting (yet) I shouldn't bother anyway, but to be on the safe side I submitted a request last week for a username:password to be able to do my TM-30 reporting online.  Now waiting for the username:password.

If you have a driving licence that has your passport number on it, and the hotel does not bother

about your passport, then as far as I'm aware, your local IO knows nothing about it.

That was one officer, another officer in the same office may say you cannot.

The immigration act states this.

"Section 38 : The house – master , the owner or the possessor of the residence , or the hotel manager
where the alien , receiving permission to stay temporary in the Kingdom has stayed , must notify the
competent official of the Immigration Office located in the same area with that hours , dwelling place or
hotel, within 24 hours from the time of arrival of the alien concerned. If there is no Immigration Office
located in that area , the local police official for that area must be notified."

Area now is considered the province where you are staying.

FWIW also Udon Thani immigration only needs a new TM30 of you change your main residence, they do not require one after a trip either in Thailand or overseas if you are returning to your previous registered address.

Caveat; This is only relevant to Udon immigration
