Illegal loggers lay landmines to deter forest rangers in Si Sa Ket

 

 

Illegal loggers have resorted to the use of landmines to kill or maim forest rangers who try to interfere with their pursuit of the highly-prized Payoong, or Siamese Redwood trees in Thailand’s forest reserves, according to the public relations office of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation today.

 

According to the report from Mr. Sathit Panthumat, chief of Huey Sala wildlife sanctuary in the northeastern province of Si Sa Ket which borders Cambodia, forest rangers on patrol in the sanctuary went to investigate after they heard the sound of falling trees.

 

As the rangers were approaching the area from where the sound had come, one of them trod on a circular metal sheet in their path. Another team member used a stick to probe the object, which they found to be a landmine of a type familiar to them.

And they'll leave them after they steal the trees for who knows to get their legs blown off years from now. Shoot these guys from helicopters.

These landmines are chines made and were originally placed by Pol Pot and his group. The Khmer illegal loggers use them to kill Thai army and Department of Wildlife personal. There are still mine fields on both side of the border that were place by the Khmer Rouge and Vietnam army that chased them into Thailand.

This takes the fight against these criminals to a whole new level. With landmines being banned, these illegal loggers have gone from breaking the law to outright terrorism, and therefore have abrogated any rights they may have had to humane and just treatment under the law. They can and must be summarily dealt with.

 

I wonder how that ranger who stepped on the landmine got away from it. Whatever, great work by his teammates.

Organized crime.  Need to bring in military.  They have weapons and large forces. Saw them in action several weeks ago.

I shall remember that tip. Poke a landmine with a stick to render it safe.????

Human lives vs. trees = strange. Human lives vs. making money (by selling the trees) = sadly normal.

They may put landmines disguised but they cannot sell wood in reasonable amounts disguised. That is how they can be beaten.
