Been open 5/6 months now and they play anything that,s on youtube if you request it...if you want heavy rock played loudly find somewhere else (next door Zero Bar has a band on and beer just 40 baht) as it,s nice these days to have a bar where you can have a beer and chat without shouting at each other

That place always smelt of old Falang and fart when I walked past so I'd always drop one as I walked past because no one would notice

Didn't know that, every time I go ( daytime ) there is soft Jazz via Youtube.

The 2-3 other customers seems also pleased with this.

They should tell or advertise one can choose the music, maybe some customer leave after 1 drink, not being fond of this kind of music.

That's what I do where there is constantly  music I don't like.

It's changed then, the one time I went the music blasted me (and others) out of the place after one drink.

It has..... missed that. It was where I sat for a couple of cheap ones at the evil hour waiting for my ride home.

Wonderful 1 been in darkness for a few days.

Yes a bit glum, but always super busy early on as I would cut through towards the old Pig and Whistle or Rosie's to have some food before hitting Walking St. I would somehow enjoy paying 50 baht for a beer at 3am or so there, and not be hassled for LDs, after the stark contrast of rip-off street. Easy for the Mrs to get to in the truck too!

No, mostly the business owners bribe because they don't won't to obey the laws. They allow gambling, they allow customers to use drugs, the don't want to care about closing times, they don't have a liquor license, they don't have a music license or even no license at all. Clever business owners bribe several people and so it is not easy for a single officer to stop this. He might then have his colleagues as enemies. The best way to stop it is to close the business. It is the same with visas. People who can't get it legally often try to bribe the officers. The guy who wants to cheat starts this. And it is the same with businesses.

Tea Money go down, up the fines from enforcement.  Many systems here are designed that way.

If it wasn't for corruption, businesses could not survive here.  They have made the laws / system that way, so everyone has to pay, or close the doors.  Remember the darts fiasco?

I know of more than one bar owner in Pattaya who have always refused to pay the police. It hasn't affected their business in any way. I'm afraid the brown envelopes are an urban myth/barstool BS.

Interesting, I would expect them to get a bit of hassle. Shop houses or beer bars? Any common factor that may be helping them? Are they closing at midnight? Are the owners policemen, or have hi-so Thai friends?

Both shophouses in Central Pattaya. They don't stay open till the wee small hours and, most importantly, no onsite rooms or particularly mucky stuff in the bar. One is a ladyboy bar, but doesn't break the law. Simple really, don't break the law, no need for brown envelopes, regularly break the law, be prepared to pay. The police try it on with most bar owners, most tell them to do one and don't see them again. Another factor for farang bar owners is don't try to work in the bar, not even to collect a few glasses. And keep your paperwork as straight as a die.

I am not saying bungs are 100% the norm but I know bar "owners" who've been told to pay up or.........

Urban Myth?......Hardly.......GoGo bars all pay.....Night clubs all pay.....Soi 6 bars all pay...Beer bars its hard to say? I am sure most do pay a little some thing at least they did pre Covid....The payments are just part of doing business in Pattaya....
There are so many codes and rules and regulations that if you got on someone's bad side...lookout......I think it would be better to just pay....

Perhaps you watch too many Mafia movies. Why should they pay if they don't do anything wrong. There is no protection money like at the Mafia.

There is no other version, no Thai/Sicilian tie up.

No little crews sipping expressos & discussing the meet with the Bangkok families.

If you tread the line then you will get attention & if you cross it then you most definitely will sooner or later.

Higher up then you will most likely need 'advice' from someone with military knowledge.

It's very hard to be a real fiscal success here without the 'help of a local partner'.

There may be cases that slipped through the net but for the most part it's a cost to business.
