saw one of the original objections to var in play tonight, var is just another layer of possible human  error.. Maguire CLEARLY kicked ? &n the nutz NO CARD.. should have been a red Aka  son down virtually the same and getting a red . NO CONSISTENCY... he then goes on to score a vital goal..  then Chelsea's Zoumma had a goal disallowed goal.. was a clear push by fred on Azpilicueta who then fell/ pushed into williams.. Azpilicueta was penalized when it was clearly fred doing the fouling..  var  is excellent for offside,  all baring that its effective  is debatable.. it diminishes the refs authority and is in the process of ruining a very good product.ie the premiership.  ALL OF WHICH WAS PREDICTED BY THOSE AGAINST IT INITIALLY.

Surely the PGMOL should give a little more consideration as to their appointees as officials? Last night there was just the one match played yet both the ref AND the VAR were from Manchester!!! Imagine the furore had it been a LiVARpool game! and the officials were both scousers.

Don't need to be a Manc to favour Man Utd. They have never been the same since Mike Riley; from Leeds; retired. Must've cost them 12 points a season.

Think you mean the guy below???? but I agree with you. My point is that the PGMOL don't exactly help themselves with their appointments.

There was also the blatant incident

I guess the ref had a poor view, but you would have thought the linesman could have seen Aguero being molested.

^^^^^^  the way its developing it's no better or worse than what was in place b4 .. barring offsides and even those decisions .... in terms of entertainment and value for the fans are debatable... the biggest benefactors are the tv pundits..whose role/importance has DRAMATICALLY  increased.. and tbh I think that was premeditated   it's a bit like Brexit.. you were warned. the prem future imo is v much at a crucial point.. with this badly thought out system.   it really could be shooting itself in the foot and it wouldnt take much to lose the loyalty of those new and marginal fans who it has recruited in the recent years  could well be lost to other leagues or sports, what the premier lg forget or choose to ignore w is that alternatives are just a very easy click of the remote away.. and once it's done, will they return ...who knows

^ ThinK you're being a bit over-pessimistic mate. No signs that I see of attendances in the Bundesliga for example have decreased and VAR has been there a couple of years now. I agree it gives the 'celebrated pundits' another string to their bow but can't see that affecting attendances at the match itself.

Biggest problem isn't VAR itself, it's the ineptness/intransigence of the officials themselves over here that causes most of the problems. If those on the pitch used the bloody monitors they were given and those at Stockley Park are less pedantic (modifying the offside rule a touch may help) then things will speed up and improve spectator and viewer satisfaction.

VAR is here to stay, like it or lump it but hopefully over the next year or two it will be seen as less detrimental and more beneficial to the game.

ott ,,,,I dont think so ,,yep the prem attendances wont be effected,  but next to the tv revenue, to say match day incomes are insignifcant,, would be disrespectful, but its the emerging tv markets and the like, that could be effected . to say our game is being 'europeanised' wouldnt be far off the mark  the prem has been marketed to death and the revenues have boomed , once its competitors do the same,, WHICH THEY WILL and the footie is  better or the same and there are cheaper alternative options, and the prems entertainment is dwindling   SUBSCRIBERS WILL CHANGE,,,and and thats where it could hurt, jsut like any brand losing its way, the prem imo is on the verge of doing so,,

Not sure what any of the above has to to with VAR itself. The PL is still growing in popularity both domestically and worldwide...that is why so many new providers and streamers  (eg Netflix, Amazon, Goal.com et al) are clamouring to get on board. Not sure who you think the 'PL's competitors are, but I think you'll find that most if not all have already implemented VAR themselves so again, I don't see the relevance.

Eventually, Sky/BT may well lose subscribers as the streaming sites become better/cheaper, especially if more successful clubs sort out individual deals with other providers. If the PL itself loses out as a result then fair enough but that is a completely different issue.

For the fans in the ground though it's not debatable is it. They hate the way it goes to VAR and they don't know what's going on and they virtually have to wait for the kick-off of a VAR disputed goal before they can break in to celebration. It's spoiling the moment, the enjoyment of a goal being scored and going mental for a few brief moments. Granted they have started putting up on the screen such as 'VAR Handball check' which is an improvement but in some ways you're better off these days being an armchair supporter than a paying punter as you get to see VAR being worked through. Why can't they show VAR being worked out on the screens in the ground - most likely because only 2 grounds in the Premier don't have screens to show it on...Old Trafford and Anfield, amazingly the homes of the two biggest clubs in England...go figure.

Kevin Friend was the VAR official responsible for Robbo's challenge........the referee who failed to give Leeds the decision was; you've guessed it......Kevin Friend. The guy is corrupt!
