webfact Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 Tourism minister orders study of Pattaya as model for 4am closing time By The Nation FILE photo Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakan said he has ordered the Tourism Authority of Thailand to use Pattaya as a model to study the benefits of delaying closing hours of pubs and bars until 4am. Phiphat said he has assigned TAT governor Yutthasak Supasorn to finish the study in time for the submission of the proposal to the Cabinet for deliberation on August 27. Phiphat said the TAT would send officials to meet with operators of entertainment places to find out how much more foreign tourists would spend if the closing hours were delayed from 2 am to 4 am. The study will examine the ratio of increased spending by each foreign tourist per day, he added. If the study reveals solid benefits from the delayed closing hours, he would ask the Cabinet to approve the extension of pub closing hours in other destinations popular with foreign tourists, including Phuket, Koh Samui, Krabi, Phang Nga, Hat Yai, Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, and Bangkok. Phiphat said he was not discouraged by the Cabinet’s rejection of his proposal to exempt Indian and Chinese tourists from current visa requirements for one year. He noted the Cabinet did not reject the proposal out of hand but asked him to study it further, adding that he would wait for a while before possible future submission to the Cabinet. Popular Post harada Posted August 22, 2019 Popular Post Posted August 22, 2019 I wouldn't have thought that Pattaya could be used as a model for anything. 1 1 6

Yes, it will. That study will be made by the specialists of the TAT, most likely the same folks responsible for those news about the ever increasing number of quality tourists (including all those millionaires and billionaires from India and China!)......... If a study is made by a government entity, it has to be accurate, right? ???? 1 1 1

Beggar Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 To me it looks as if they just care about making more money at all costs. Why don't they worry also about noise pollution, problems with drunken people, accidents and so on. At least I didn't read anything about these aspects in connection with Pattaya. I think there is no need to send people to Pattaya and ask the business owners since it might have been decided anyway already.
jacko45k Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 They should take a look at 4am, Walking St area hardly looks closed about then as it is!

There are now 4 am and 2am zones in Pattaya already. If I remember correctly Walking Street and Beach Road are 4am and the rest is 2am. Was introduced by the military government when they wanted to end the 1am closing times.
legend49 Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 why give it to TAT to do. They will spin the chocolate wheel in the office have a guesstimate in a minute.
Emdog Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 I imagine a line quickly formed outside minister's office. "I'll go, I'll go!". All expense paid trip to "study" late closing, perhaps side study of how that impacts bar girl rates... what could go wrong?
jaiyen Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 That will mean the poor bar girls will have to hang around till after 4 to go home with a drunken customer for a 1000 Baht bonk ! I dont think they will support the idea.

Khon Kaen popular with tourists????? I seriously doubt that extending opening hours in Khon Kaen will increase any revenues. There are not many farang bars here and still not enough farang customers for all of them. I wouldn't object to the later opening times if they did something to control the noise levels from the noisy Thai bars. I like the fact that the bars in Udon Thani "close" at midnight. (You can still get a lock in). 2
Sydebolle Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 Just go back and look at the arguments they used a few years ago when these di"*ç%"heads introduced this regulation - and a word to the wise - keep everything on record because in not too distant future another exemplary representative of the political stage will claim the limelights for putting the nightlife into proper proportions and will request switch off of lights not later than midnight - again. Yyyyyyyaaaaaahhhhhhhnnnnnn - how boring all this rubbish is ???? 1

mikebell Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 Most Walking Street clubs already open till this hour. Huge monthly sums are paid to police & army to ensure this.
Cadbury Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 They might just as well make it dawn. That will make it safer for bar and club patrons to stagger home in the daylight and allow some visual recognition of approaching katoeys. 1

GreasyFingers Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 What if the study finds prostitution in the bars. Will they call the police?
happy chappie Posted August 22, 2019 Posted August 22, 2019 Another great idea from some moron in a job they are not fit to be in.if your getting less tourists, spending less money you open up longer hours in the middle of the night. i would suggest closing earlier and save on wages and electricity. from what I've been reading lately thailand is going down the pan and it's starting to sink in but far too late to do anything about it. just by waiving the visa fee and opening empty bars for longer hours ain't going to do bo diddley.once a tourist has a <deleted> exspensive holiday they tick the box and never go back.theres a lot more holiday destinations than Thailand and they should of learned that but haven't.
