Why are so many expats oddballs?

Featured Replies

I mean compared to normal folk back home. And why are they so nosey and want to know your business when it has absolutely nothing to do with them?

Discuss.

many are rejects from their own country, so there's usually something wrong with them

I guess it depends on where you look.....They are a lot of them also still in your home country.....When I go back for visits I avoid troubled areas - and people.....

I've found a lot of accomplished people here from many countries & walks of life....Most still have an adventurous, excited spirit & pursue their interests....

But, like in my home country, I avoid getting around the at risk crowd.....If, I meet somebody that's somewhat off kilter it's my choice whether to continue a conversation or not.....Looming trouble is fairly easy to spot.....It's a mixed bag everywhere....

hi.

I have got a Spermatocele cyst in my scrotum, the size of one of my testicles. So I guess I really am an ODD (numbered) BALL.

I'd say it's the oposite. They realised that there was something  wrong with their countries/governments.

I usually have the opposite experience from them wanting to know my business, they want to talk about themselves. I barely make eye contact and the next thing I know they've talked for an hour telling me how many houses they've built and sold, how many rental properties they own, how much money they make, all their investments, their entire military career and how they were black-ops and special forces. I might expect that from younger men trying to prove themselves in the world, but these are older guys in their 70's and 80's.

I enjoy back and forth conversation, but can't stand someone who talks non-stop as if they are imparting fascinating wisdom and knowledge that you should feel grateful and privileged to hear.

Have you ever wondered it might be you who is the oddball

Expats, many ex-military, are not satisfied with the can'ed lifestyle in their home countries and the obese women who prowl the dating sites using pics which are 10 years old or older...

I personally do not find anything odd about putting your retirement money where it does the most good...????

Yes, military service has screwed up more normal people than you could imagine possible.

But getting back to the OP who asks, "Why are so many expats oddballs?" before pondering, "...why are they so nosey and want to know your business when it has absolutely nothing to do with them?"

Is this an invitation to discuss irony?

"OK honey, before I buy you a drink there is something I need to tell you."

"You have three balls. All the ladies know. Three balls cost extra."

Also, back home, there is much more pressure to conform....to act and be like everyone else.  In LOS, there is no such pressure.  You can be yourself.

TMI !

(and just in case you don't know the acronym; Too Much Information)

Oddball, someone who deviates from the norm, that would apply to most expats here otherwise we wouldn't risk anything to be here instead we would be wrapped up in boredom and safety back home.

Mmm, good effort but ultimately that is <snip>. As for being bored back home, is that a joke? There are a zillion more things to do back home than there is in this sauna. Even Thai's look completely bored here.

On the whole I think people that uproot from their own country and spend considerable time in another culture are pretty adventurous, and from my observations come from every walk of life. The fact that people engage with you and talk about things that would be considered private back home is because you are a stranger who shares their language and culture, and they might not meet very many of them on any given day. I wouldn't, but I can understand why some do.

it was a joke referencing the OP's name, never mind..

I love guys who tell you that they were 30 odd years in the Special Forces but are afraid of little spiders.

And of course, those who've got two houses with swimming pools in Pattaya, but work 600 km away in the sticks and buy a 140K bike on finance with 36 monthly installments.

Let's take one category, the middle aged divorcee or widow and the retiree. Back home it would not be so easy to find a partner or get out socially, they are largely ignored in society ... so they can sit at home watching TV or come to a place like Thailand and feel young again. There was an elderly guy at my gym from the US who fits that category, and he loves it in Pattaya. He's a former executive and wealthy, but he likes going out and he can find a younger and prettier girl here, as opposed to an old lady in the US. For him it's a simple calculation and he's genuinely happy.

And here the governing is better....? ????

After being in LOS a long time I found it better not to mix......So, maybe I am an oddball or maybe the rest are...????

Yep, decent enough point and good luck to him, but ultimately that still involves going out to bars and doing the bar girl thing, if he's not doing that I would bet he's either in a shopping mall or stuck at home, besides the gym that is which truly are boring places.

I think so. The only contact/interaction I have with authorities here is about two hours per year during the annual extension..

NCC1701A  LOL yes you are correct.  As if Expatriates had exclusivity to being weird.  I believe every country has ample examples of how Darwin's theory of the survival of the superior may apply only to non-humans. Obviously a huge number of humans seem to find ways to continue breeding who are a few french fries short of a full happy meal.

Oddball :  a person or thing that is atypical, bizarre, eccentric, or nonconforming, especially one having beliefs that are unusual but harmless.

Well, certainly there are all types of oddballs all over the world.   It may be the only "group" that I might concede that I belong to.   But then again, I hate being classified.  Like to think I am one of a kind  ????

One thing in my observation  is that most oddballs here do not like the other oddballs here   lol
