To answer the Op if you can wait until just after the expiry date - you may find you get an extra year. The general rule at DLT is 3 months before. But as mentioned: why go early? You can do it up to one year after expiry without extra effort/penalty. DLT is not as chaotic as Immigration. There are variations about what proof of residence is accepted and whether you need two originals or original plus copy is sufficient.
