Odd Souveneir Shops

Featured Replies

Anybody know of any souveneir shops that sell Thai oddities? Not the normal tourist souveneirs (I know, an oxymoron). Any local spots with items like liquor with scorpions or snakes in it. I'm looking for the more unique items of Thailand.

Between Sukumvit Soi 2 & 4 (close to the gas station) there is a pharmacy that sells some type of liquor with a snake inside. Dont know the price.

Not actually sure that is Thai though. When we were in Hanoi, there was gallons of the stuff. Million of bottles ranging in size from around 100 ml to 1 litre. Each had a snake ranging in size. There were so many bottles and so many snakes, I decided that either they were breeding them deliberately or the serpents were rubber. I have never seen anything like that in Thailand.

What about a tin of crocodile meat?

The snakes are Chinese medicine. Supposed to be good for a man's virility, and all that stuff.

Is this easy to find in the local supermarket?

I don't know about cans of the croc meat in supermarkets, we've often bought it at the crocodile farm and given it to people for 'joke' presents. I have seen dried crocodlile meat in Foodland though if that's any good to you. On the deli counter in polythene bags.

Do you know if they still have it?

Thanks.

Yaowarat (Chinatown). Have also seen it along the border crossing (by land) in or close to the Duty Free Shops.

Try MBK. I've seen cobra whiskey, cobra plus scorpion whiskey, crocodile meat, skins, dead insects, etc. Can't remember which floor, but it's one of the upper floors.

Chatuchak market would be a good place for this sort of stuff as well. In fact, I'm almost certain that they have loads of wilder choices there.

Happy hunting.

The 'Buddha Market' in Maharat Road is good for interesting gifts. It's tucked in behind the shops on the river's edge.
