Thai great (and great!) gran aged 108 remembers when a house cost 6 baht!

Ban Muangwent to visit a 108 year old woman who is not only healthy and happy - she talks non-stop all day!

Sudta Sirijan was born on March 14th 1911 when Thailand was still known as Siam and things were very different to today.

Sudta spoke fondly of her early days citing a famous and romantic Thai inscription about there being plenty to eat: Nai nam mee plaa, nai naa mee khaaw (Fish in the rivers and rice in the fields).

These days it is harder to find good things to eat, she said, but despite some high blood pressure she is very happy and healthy and looking forward to the future.

She spoke of the changing cost of living saying that she can remember when a whole pig cost 50 satang (half a baht) and you could get a cow for 5 baht and a house for six baht (20 US cents today!).

She had seven children, six girls and a boy and lived in places like Surin and Kalasin apart from Udon.

She can talk and talk all day and is happy and healthy said Ban Muang.

But the media said she was not the oldest centenarian in Udon - that honor goes to a woman living in the village of Ban Non Sao Ae who is 112.

These sorts of price comparisons (East and West) tend to leave out how much the pay was then. 5 satang a day?

I saw the Beatles in '65 for $6 and Rolling Stones in '66 for $4.50 (best seats, too). Wow! great! However, minimum wage for a teen like me was $1.25 an hour. It's not the price, it's how many hours work you put in to get something.

I can beat that! I say Led Zepplin in Portland Oregon in December of 67' 2 weeks B/4 I left for Nam , wait for it $2.75 a whack! ????

Maybe she had a harder life than you?
but you could always post a photo of yourself at age 108 to see what you look like... if you're still around that is !

Yes, but I bet she has not mastered sarcasm as well as my 85 year old MIL ( not a <deleted> )

Must have been English in a previous incarnation as sometimes she can trump me.

My MIL said she once bought a rai of land for 200 baht.

Can you see a bunch of them in singlets sitting in some beer bar toothlessly cackling  about the last time they felt it stir. Bar fines were 100 baht.....

Bless the old gals heart. To reach that age is something special. I would bet her happy

attitude played no small part

in it.
