Police warning to parents after Chaiyaphum youth electrocuted

Police were called to a house in Nong Bua Daeng district of Chaiyaphum after an uncle found his 18 year old nephew dead in bed.

Suthee had apparently been electrocuted while playing games on his phone.

The charger was plugged in and the hand of the victim was draped over the plug.

The uncle said he had heard a noise but just thought it was his nephew having fun playing games as he always did.

Pol Maj Withoon Phaphonngam warned parents to tell their children about the dangers of playing while devices are plugged in.

Rip to to youth and his family.

The charger is the device that failed.

Probably a cheap charger with no proper engineering of safety.

An RCD would have cut the power when it detected a fault.

Sad to see another preventable and senseless death. People are regularly electrocuted by shoddy products and workmanship hereabouts. TV has covered them regularly.

18 and not smarter than falling asleep with the hand on something as dangerous as thai electric. That´s sad.

I suppose you don't move while you sleep.

It's a pretty unsensitive comment as this could have happened to (almost) anybody.

It wasn't the "device" (a phone) that electrocuted the boy, it was a bad quality plug in a cheap extension cord that probably met all the Thai safety requirements.

Another case of not blaming the right thing.

aye.

the charger seems fine.

A quality circuit breaker system on the main board would have prevented this.

sad to see a young person die so needlessly. Sad for the family, what an avoidable tragedy.

Sadly no earth or ground wires or rcd which could possibly have prevented this sad loss of life. Many times I have removed the phone from the hands of my sleeping teenager before tucking in and kissing good night. Sad loss to that family rip.

Yes, cheap stuff that passed the safety standard in Thailand.  If you are using your hair blower in the hotel room you need to be very careful.  I am talking about the hair blower you brought from home(USA, France, England, Japan etc.,) and you use adapter from Thailand . Quite a few tourists had the shock of their lives. (electric shock to be precise). Thai government doesn't seem too concerned about this problem not enough tourists electrocuted yet.

In Singapore and Malaysia it doesn't happen because the adapter or plug has a fuse that cut off electricity if overloaded, a safety measure that works。

An RCD or (RCBO or ELCB) would have cut the power.

When more current enters the active line, than returns on the neutral line, tThe devices disconnect the power.

They detect the imbalance of electrical current and cut the power in less than 30 milliseconds, and they save lives.

In most western countries, they are mandatory for new or refurbished houses because they are so effective.
