The CD's from Ubuntu have arrived, so tried to install on my laptop...following the instructions on the sleeve...but when i click on the "download"icon....the CD drive and the hard drive lights show they are working.....and then the whole system comes to a dead stop......have left it like that for over an hour....no change!

I have tried a different CD...with the same result....it will NOT install...

soooooooooo....back to ubuntu 5....which installs with no problems.....even tried formatting the HD with a windoze disk....and then re-installing Ubuntu 6....and same ###### thing happens every time...

Any suggestions on what to try next? I have considered seeing if the laptop will float in my pond!!

Which instructions are you following? My Ubuntu 6.06 sleeve says "put this CD in the CD drive and turn on or restart your computer", and I'm not sure where the "download" icon you refer to is.

Have you got as far as booting from the CD and getting the live desktop? If so, the next step is to select the "Install" icon and follow the instructions.

I did exactly the same...put in the disk....get "boot options" choose " boot from Cd "....it runs until the icon appears on the screen.....I click on that....it runs for a short time....then freezes....have tried many times to install....without success....but I can re-install ubuntu5 with no hassle.....

As I said earlier.... I have even formatted the HD before attempting to install.....and it makes absolutely no difference.....the sodding thing just freezes..

Sounds like it is possible the CDs you have are corrupted. Can't remember if there is a hash (md5 crc) number on the CDs so you can check if it is corrupted. Will take a look at my copy and see.

It's still not clear to me where you are hanging up...

get "boot options" choose " boot from Cd
Sounds like your computer's BIOS boot options - so far so good
it runs until the icon appears on the screen.....I click on that....it runs for a short time....then freezes

What icon is that - are you referring to the Ubuntu logo?

The first thing that happens when I boot from my 6.06 disk is the Ubuntu logo comes up with some options - the mouse pointer isn't active so there isn't anything to click on.

If you do get to the options screen, then try Start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode and see if that works.

If you don't get to the options screen - as tywais points out - it could be the disks.

EDIT: If you get to the options screen there is a menu option to check the CD

I have tried "start in safe graphics mode"

I have tried the disk check......was informed that the disk is OK...

I have tried a second disk

what i get is a picture showing "examples" and under that a styilsed icon of a computer which says "install"... on which I click .and that is as far as I ever get.....the CD and HD run for a while.....then zilch...nothing .....nada.....have left it like that for an hour.....still nothing happens...

Most frustrating!!

I can see how that would be frustrating!

I can offer a couple of suggestions:

1) You could try using the alternate install CD - it bypasses the whole live-cd scenario, and uses a text-menu based installer. This is more likely to install correctly but doesn't offer the live-cd functionality - it sounds like you don't need it anyway. You can get it from the Thai mirror:

http://mirror.in.th/ubuntu/6.06/ubuntu-6.0...ernate-i386.iso but it's still a hefty download.

2) As it's a notebook, it's probably a model-specific issue, so if you search Ubuntu Forums or check Linux on Laptops you might find someone else has done the hard work for you.

I'd get the alternate install CD, it's very likely to solve your problem, if you have bandwidth issues then it's a bit more difficult but a friend or a net cafe is an option.

Good luck!

PS: The mirror.in.th site is down for me right now :o

I can't really help with getting the 6.10 install to work, but I can say that the 7.04 release is now in beta and already in a better state than 6.10. If you have the bandwidth, you might want to download and burn a CD. Or if not, wait until the 7.04 CDs are available from shipit.ubuntu.com and wait a few weeks for them to arrive.

To wait for version 7 might be the best option....to download anything here takes far too long...mayhap ver7 will install without problems....shall just have to wait and see....thanks for all the help....and sympathy!!

I had a similar problem installing Mepis 6.0 on my notebook. Mepis is based upon Ubuntu, so perhaps the solution that worked for me will also work for you.

I had also tried the low res boot option from the menu and it did not work for me.

At the boot menu, press F3. If this feature is the same in Mepis and Ubuntu, you should get a menu of screen resolutions. Choose a resolution you are fairly sure will be supported by your notebook and proceed.

Good luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

Also the install may get hung up on PCMCIA. I had this problem with Knoppix and a couple of others and just specified <name of distro> nopcmcia and away it went. There are a great deal of little things that can pull you up with Linux and it's usually just a small instruction at the pre-boot command line to get you up and running. As another poster has said the forums are generally full of these problems and their subsequent fixes. Good luck with it all. I have found that the easiest one to install was PCLinuxOS and this is now my distro of choice.

Cheers

Jimmy

I have to say, they'd have an easier time marketing this to non-geeks if they would stop giving the releases stupid names.

Edgy Eft, Gutsy Gibbon, Dapper Drake? Not the same ring as Tiger, Vista, or Leopard.

Do you mean like the real release name - Ubuntu 7.04 ? The Feisty Fawn name is just a code name. I've seen worse (I once installed Victoria Bitter onto a Network Appliance file server).

I just installed Ubuntu 7.04 on my new notebook very nice and also very fast (dual boot with Vista). Had quite a few problems with installation though, and it didn't recognise my wireless, which is highly annoying.

Agree with the stupid names. They could at least name it after some cool and under-represented invertebrate.
