MRT plus or MANGMOOM..???

Recommended Posts

Looking at the prepaid options on MRT... other than the 30 THB administrative fee for MRT plus card, is there any difference in the two?  I noticed BTS takes a big variety of credit cards for their advance purchase, what about MRT?  Do either of these tack on a fee for cc use?  Oh, and that thing was like Hitler's Boxcars last night at 9pm..got on at Asok, didn't get a seat till Lad Prao, and it was packed again at Tao Poon... some good lookers on it for sure, but I don't see it as a viable way to get to and from work during rush hour, 10 times per week... just my two Baht..

Don't bother with the current variant of Mangmoom (you may not even be able to get one now), it's just an MRT-Plus card with different printing.

Mangmoom is effectively dead in the water, MRTA took over from OTP 2-3 years back and have, since then, achieved absolutely nothing. Their "advisors" (one of the major banks) told them to ditch all the work that was already done and go with an EMV based system. But zero action, no specs. no budget, zip. There is also talk of giving it back to OTP.

The MRT is very busy at almost all times, it also seems they're committed to remaining with 3-car trains. If you have a job that allows you to be flexible with your hours (early start, early finish) it may be a viable commuting vehicle although one of my workmates who uses the Blue Line says it's chaos even at 6.30AM (she rides Tao Poon to Chatuchak).

Yes, it's only gotten worse since they opened the extension. Evening rush hour starts earlier, more packed and ends later.

I'd complained on TV before many dismissed me. They need longer trains that fill the station running every five mins in rush hour.

Most of all people need to put their fkcuing phones away, be polite and actively manage themselves on and off the trains to maximize ridership. The people riding this mess are so stupid. It's total aggro.

No one gives their seat for pregnant women. Small children. Everyone absolutely fixated on games, Facebook and YouTube.

I ride toward hualampong in the morning, 610-20. It's no way chaos. Plenty of standing room. 640 it does start to pack out.

What about all the new lines under construction?  Is there anything in place that says they all have to have a shared ticketing system, at least?  Would be easier to make that part of the terms rather than trying to retroactively make it happen.

I already have three separate cards for my commute - ARL, MRT, BTS - and it's bloody annoying.

Tell me about it. The government promised legislation that all new lines would use Mangmoom, then failed to deliver Mangmoom let alone the legislation.

As of now:-

  • The Pink and Yellow Lines will use Rabbit.
  • The Red Line is SRT going alone, not even compatible with the ARL.
  • The other lines will be MRT-Plus or Rabbit depending upon which operator gets the operating contract.

There is a possibility that BTS and BEM (MRT) will be forced to accept each others cards, technically "interesting" but the politics are going to be the real killer.

Watch this space, but don't hold your breath.

That's because they're not wearing special tags.

Aren't the tags BTS only?

@Number 6 Pregant ladies can get special "I am pregnant" badges which are supposed to notify other passengers to give up their seats.

Thanks for that.  What a mess.

I don't know what's it's called, had it for a long time - just an MRT stored value card.  I only ever top up with cash, not sure if they take credit cards, sorry.

Yeah, and I have never seen anyone wearing them.

I think I've seen one, and the lady in question was about 10 months gone, no doubt whatever for even the least observant.

MRT? I'd never seen. But in all honesty Crossy that tag won't make them do anything. Everyone fixated on their phones in part so the 15-40 crowd won't feel socially compelled to get up. It's just dreadful the manners.

Many don't mind their children.

Seems daily people having loud full blown phone conversations.

I get very stressed by it all when it's crowded. It's as though 75% are actively doing something socially undesirable while riding.

I have noticed some MRT propaganda on the monitors. They need more. Run it all the time no adverts. No posters and promos in the stations only rider courtesy propaganda. Show in on TV as well. People are just bumpkins.

I finally saw one! "BTS, baby on board!". And our night have been the same lady - massively, and very obviously, pregnant.

And it was a full train. And she was standing.  But it was so busy the people in their seats couldn't have seen her or her tags (in the inbetween carriages bit).

Au Contraire. People make a big show about how carrying they are and offer their seats to old ladies who don't want to be old.

All show of course.

But sadly they don't. I ride daily and often see pregnant, elderly and kids standing. I do like on MRT the reserved seats is now has large signage but still 20-50 crowd won't budge...there's games and Facebook to attend to.

Who told you that??? The BTS stopped accepting credit cards many, many years ago. Maybe about 4 years ago. Cash only if you want to top up.

Kids should be standing. They're the healthiest and youngest so don't get why they should be sitting when older people have to stand.

I once thought that. Especially being a teacher and on my feet all day while kids unfortunately in chairs all day. Especially the fatties. Butit's not that simple.

But over 65 I'd agree...

Too many older folks expect seats and that's wrong too. I'm close to 60. All the aunties behavior often over the top.

It's only a short ride.
