The numbers have ranged from 100 million unpaid to 300 million unpaid.. For ALL non Thai visitors.. Consider 40 million arrive per annum thats a range of 2.5 baht to 7.5 baht per visitor !!!

If I may correct that. The numbers have ranged from 100 million unpaid to 500 million unpaid.

Sathit Pitutecha, deputy minister of public health, told Reuters.

Thailand, a Southeast Asian tourist destination popular with ageing Westerners, currently has to pay around 500 million baht ($16.49 million) a year in medical bills for foreigners over 50, he said, an age group the government describes as “risky”.

  • That appears to be more of a opinion piece than anything else that is not entirely correct.

Well, this "piece" kinda lost credibility when I read this; "In 2018, 680,000 out of 3,420,000 expats who visited the hospital didn’t pay their bills. The total unpaid amount was estimated at 305 mill

  • I've had that thought all of my life since they screwed my dad over when I was five year old. He drilled it into us kids; don't trust any of those bastards.

wow, thats like 12.5 baht per tourist visitor!

totally worth risking your 48 billion baht expat market over *

* based on 80000 retirees spending 600K per year

The article linked to in the OP's message states:

"In 2018, 680,000 out of 3,420,000 expats who visited the hospital didn’t pay their bills. The total unpaid amount was estimated at 305 million baht.  The majority of unpaid bills were from retirees."

I doubt it very much that there are 3.4 Million Expats visiting Hospitals in Thailand every year.

And I very seriously doubt that 680,000 of them visited Thailand Hospitals and didn't pay.

But even if that is true - that means the average bill for each non-payer was 448.53 Baht.

Something just doesn't add up about this whole Thailand insurance scheme/scam.

You know, I have also noticied that something doesn't add up about every Thailand Government program/scam.

Am I missing something?

Really need to provide some supporting documentation for this claim.

Apart from the odd story on Tv most tourists have travel insurance, many Retirees cant get it and cant afford health insurance plus older you get the more non accident related emergencies will happen.

Makes sense to me
