Fire broke out in a parking lot at Soon Udon Thani Hospital in downtown Udon Thani in Thailand's north east yesterday.

The blaze completely destroyed 12 motorcycles and damaged 22 others. One Honda car was damaged.

Three fire engines brought the blaze under control in 20 minutes after motorcycle taxi riders and tessakit (municipal council workers) had failed to stop it.

Daily News reported that a large crowd had gathered when Muang district police arrived - one woman was in tears after seeing her bike go up in flames.

Areerat, 35, a motorcycle taxi rider at the hospital for two years said she was 50 meters away when she thought she heard an explosion.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Police want to interview the owners of all of the bikes to determine if something under a seat might have started it - they suggested a cigarette lighter or powerbank.

They don't believe that this was a deliberate act as it was in broad daylight in a well populated area.

CCTV is being examined as part of the investigation.

I would tend to agree.  No liability or collision insurance of any kind.  But it does raise the question, when registering a motorbike, are Thais required to show proof of insurance?  In the USA the systems are pretty strict and do check at registration time.  Of course there are always loopholes

I would say that posters #3, #4 and #5 have never owned a small motorbike in Thailand.

Why ?

Because there are writting about insurances ?

If you do not know it, it is very easy to insure a little motorbike  in Thailand against theft, fire;
you just have to want it ....

Good job by the firefighters.

Things could be better with quality hoses that dont leak, and more practice

It would work much better, if they would use foam instead of water.

When we go to pay the annual tax payment for our Click, we also buy 1st class insurance which covers all risks including personal accident medical cover. You should be able get this cover from any of the numerous agents.

And not tackle it from down wind either, it's potentially dangerous. But to be fair, they may have been hampered by access.

Yes. You cannot tax the bike without an insurance certificate. But, of course not everyone buys tax!

So you bought this first-class insurance at the government office then. I'm due to renew the tax on my car this week, can you let me know the name of the company you used and I'll ask about it when I am there.

'So you bought this first-class insurance at the government office then'. Did I say that? No, I did not say that.

I said you can buy it one of the numerous agencies that carry out inspections and procure tax and insurance on your behalf.

Motorcycle Burglary Insurance

Designed to lessen your financial burden, this insurance program
will cover the case of loss of or total damage caused to your insured motorcycle
due to an accident.  Premiums start at 900 Baht only.

Suitable for
  • Owners of motorcycles

Subject matter of insurance

  • A motorcycle

Coverage

  • Motorcycle theft (stealing, pillaging, robbery)
  • Totally damage is caused to the motorcycle due to an accident in which the motorcycle is involved.

I'm not sure if that would actually cover them in this particular case, no mention of fire.

I know that the yearly registration tax covers a small motorbike for up to 30,000 baht in medical expenses in the case of an accident and in addition to that I have seperate accident insurance that will cover me for up to 100,000 baht in medical expenses. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I can't find any motorcycle insurance that would cover you for theft, damage (both to your vehicle and other vehicles involved) and medical expenses in the same way that you can obtain it for a car.

suggest you actually do some research, we insure our car and bike every year without any hassles, its not rocket science or difficult unless you are too lazy to do it, he said agents not govt office, just google insurance agents in Thailand and you will get heaps of them

No, I'm not too lazy to research it and I tax and insure my car every year also. Last year when I insured my car I asked the agent if they covered small motorcycles, said no. The dealer I bought my motorcycle from also said no insurance available other than fire and theft - not like a Thai to turn down the chance of making some money.

Would it be so difficult for people like you who have this insurance to actually name a company along with premium paid and amount of cover rather just generalise?
