China says won't tolerate challenges to Hong Kong's 'one country, two systems' status

BEIJING (Reuters) - China will not tolerate anything that challenges the bottom line of the “one country, two systems” formula that governs Hong Kong, a senior China parliamentary official said on Friday.

Hong Kong was an important part of discussions at a plenum of the ruling Communist Party which finished on Thursday, said Shen Chunyao, head of the Basic Law Committee of the parliament’s standing committee.

Beijing also will curtail infiltration activities by foreign forces, Shen said.

China will ensure Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability and protect national security in the face of unrest there, the Communist Party said on Thursday after the plenum, though it unveiled no new policy steps.

Hong Kong was handed from British to Chinese rule in 1997 under the “one country, two systems” formula, which guarantees freedoms not granted in mainland China.

Since June, protesters have taken to the streets of the city in sometimes violent demonstrations in response to perceived Chinese meddling with those promised freedoms.

ChiComs look to dominate smaller countries--like Thailand.  Very little pushback from Bangkok is worrisome.

Pushback??? The Thais are running into China's arms, with a giant grin on their face.

it's just a matter of time before "one country, one system". this is inevitable, indeed. hong kong can't resist for ever

That was the deal all along, which was why a time limit for the 'duel system' was included as part of the handover agreement with the UK. The protesters are on a hiding to nothing and will not be allowed to win any meaningful concessions. Tough deal if you are not a Chinese sympathiser.  It's just one more ex Colony that we Brits screwed up along the path of history.

So China will not tolerate its own policies and actions?

Pure duplicity.

China is the single greatest threat to Hong Kong's 'one country, two systems' status.

I agree with Xi, China should have one Party, one System, the Hong Kong System!

While it is true that the Brits agreed to sign over control of HK to the Chicoms, and that they would assume control by 2047, it did not mean that they could exert oppressive control over the territory prior to that. China did agree to give them political autonomy prior to that date, which they appear to be refusing to comply with, or simply interpreting in a rather draconian fashion, as it pleases them.

The entire planet knows China is the nasty, oppressive bull in the China closet, no pun intended. Most nations feel there is nothing they can do about it. I really applaud the people of Hong Kong for taking a stand. And since the universe is always in a constant state of flux, there has to be some room for evolution. Unless you are the Chicoms. They are a party that imposes terror, and they must be resisted with all the power within our beings.
