Sure, I've seen a lot of horrendous drivers in Thailand.  But I'm amazed that the death rate isn't a lot higher.

 

I challenge any math whizzes to actually slice and dice the statistics and come up with a different conclusion.  Math only, please.  Intuition, common sense, obviousness based on observations don't count.  Just an analysis of the actual numbers, please.

 

 

Mr impulse spouting "do the maths" doesn't give your comment any more credence in fact let us break it down to mathematical facts as you rabbit on about maths so much: 1,770 with a little over 100 deaths are motorbike riders of the 1.11 million motorbike riders in the UK so what is that 0.001% or 1 in 10 thousand out of the reported road deaths in the UK in 2018. Both country's are about the same size and same population. So Thailand with its more accurate  20, 000 Road related deaths compared to UK 1,770 Road deaths. Mmmmmm we can work the figures if I had the time into accidents per 100k but you like math work it out. Nothing to do with number of motorbikes and all to do with crazies on the road. 15 years experience driving in Thailand SUV and big bikes.

How does that break down into deaths per km driven on scooters?  The main difference between the UK, the US, Aus and Thailand is that in the former colonies,  scooters are generally hobbies that sit in the garage except on nice weekends.  In Thailand, they're basic, daily transportation- rain, shine, wind and flood.

 

Traffic studies done in Aus and the USA conclude that scooters are 20-40 times as dangerous PER KM DRIVEN as a 4 wheeled vehicle.  Not per scooter, since there's a huge discrepancy in the usage between the nations.  Or per capita, because there's a huge difference between developed and developing countries (not to mention tropical countries where scooters can be driven 12 months a year vs the great white north where they sit parked in the cold for most of the year).

 

If 10-15x as many of your vehicles are 20-40x as dangerous, traffic fatalities would go up astronomically.  Fortunately, economic conditions allow most of us to choose a safer mode of transport back home.  Not so true for Thailand where cars are outside the budget of most folks.  They're stuck on a crazy dangerous mode.
