Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said he met representatives of the Alibaba Group after opening the Shanghai Trade Exhibition in China recently and the online retail giant has now agreed to have a “Thailand Section” on its website by this month dedicated solely to selling Thai products.

“It will be a portal for Thai makers of quality products to access the online markets in China and other countries via the Alibaba platform,” Jurin said.

“Buyers will be able to more conveniently browse specifically for items from Thailand.”

He quoted Alibaba as saying 45 Thai companies had expressed interest in advertising their products and services in the Thailand Section.

“The ministry will also cooperate with Alibaba’s Hema supermarket chain, which currently has 180 branches in China, in placing Thai products on their shelves,” Jurin said. “Hema is planning to expand to 400 locations within the coming year.”

Thai products in high demand in China include processed fruits, curry paste, seasonings and handicrafts, he said.

“Alibaba is a highly popular e-commerce platform in China and cooperating with them will help increase our export value considerably without having to build our own platform,” he added.

How do you buy stuff from Alibaba I've seen some things but it seems like it's geared more for whole salers then individuals

It is for wholesalers. Their consumer sites are T-Mall or JD.com.

Ah, I see. "Quality" curry paste, fruit, and handicrafts. Ought to bring in billions and billions of something.

I've already bought from Alibaba, great service and perfect timing!

Alibaba acquired control of Lazada in 2016 with an initial $1 billion investment. Including , Alibaba will have ponied up a total of $4 billion to invest into Lazada, which has operations in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore.

This should read "the online retail giant had previously agreed to .... selling Thai products."

May 2018:

  • Jack Ma, founder of e-commerce giant Alibaba*, talks during the MoU's Signing Ceremony of "Smart Digital Hub and Digital Transformation Strategic Partnership" in a hotel at Bangkok, Thailand April 19, 2018.
  • Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak told reporters .... that Alibaba’s digital hub will be a platform that connects Thai agricultural products to the Chinese and global markets.
  • Alibaba-backed Lazada is already present in Thailand and is one of the most popular e-commerce businesses in the nation of 69 million.

Current use of China's digital marketing platform was merely an expansion of Thai products. Doing more MOU's is just a political tool to boost Prayut's government image - but it's not really doing anything unique or new.

* Note that Jack was (and likely still) a member of the Communist politburo, an unelected committee that essentially rules China.

Jack Ma is an advisor not a member. Much the same as Yao Ming the ex-basketball player. He has no say on any decision making.  Plus the Politburo is an elected body. It takes 20 years to be elected onto it.
