Sourcing products in Thailand to export to Australia

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Not sure if the right place to post this but, I'm doing a small property development in Aus (18 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, 18 toilets) and was thinking maybe it would be easier to source stuff from Thailand, rather than flying to China and dealing with the Chinese.

A lot of stuff is made here anyhow right? Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'm going to reach out to a few brands/suppliers and see how the prices compare, but would appreciate any feedback/advice.

Thanks

I can't imagine what 'stuff' you'd want to go to the trouble of sourcing in Thailand (for such a small project) that you couldn't acquire in Oz. Surely there must be alternative 'stuff' at a more reasonable cost?

You'd have the expense of your travel, having to obtain an export license here, an import license most probably in Oz, sourcing hassle and expenses, shipping costs and tax to contend with.

I live in Thailand, and though my project is not big, I could easily fill a shipping container. I need for example 60 doors, 60 door frames, 60 door handles, 18 toilets, 12 shower heads, 12 vanities etc. Considering there are factories here that make toilets, doors, it could workout better price wise.

I'm still pricing everything out, but Australia isn't cheap to buy stuff, it's not like the US. Some products like toilets/doors, if you go for the cheapest available in Aus, it's the same price of a higher quality item that could be bought in Thailand from the retail price.

I don't believe you need an export license to send these kinds of products to Aus, or one to import. Though will look further into this, thanks for pointing it out.

Export licenses have been established for certain products, such as seeds, tobacco leaves and trees. In addition, products such as rice and sugar require export licenses under the Export Standards Act. This law makes it possible to control the quality of these products intended for export.

There is no requirement for businesses or individuals to have an overall license to import goods into Australia, however you may need a permit to clear certain types of goods through customs. Several categories of goods are restricted or prohibited from import.

If they are made of wood then you will probably need proof that they are not made from CITES Listed material along with proof that they are free from wood boring insects
