The government is amendable to a suggestion by the Thai Amusement and Leisure Parks Association to turn roads in Bangkokโ€™s Yaowarat district into walking streets each Sunday, barring vehicle access to open the area to pedestrians and attracting more visitors.

ย

Its president, Wuthichai Luangamornlert, said after a meeting on Thursday (November 14) betweenย Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-chaย and the Board of Trade that the proposal was part of the private sectorโ€™s urgent efforts to create new tourism attractions.

ย

He said the premier felt the idea could become a reality as soon as the end of this year or early next year and even extended to locales in other provinces.

ย

Wuthichai said Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang would coordinate with police on the walking-street project in Bangkokโ€™s Chinatown.

ย

Board of Trade chairman Kalin Sarasin said the private sector proposed seven measures to the premier, including that the government clear tax and legal obstacles that hamper the tourism industry.

ย

It asked that the Board of Investment offer more tax benefits to tourism operators and revise the jet fuel tax.

ย

It would also like to see more VAT refund outlets in Bangkok and more promotion of specific aspects of tourism such as spas and massage parlours.
