BANGKOK (NNT) - Ahead of an unofficial ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting today, Deputy Prime Minister, Gen Prawit Wongsuwon consulted with Gen Fenghe, the Chinese Defense Minister, and expressed his admiration for China’s support for ASEAN’s continued leading roles in the region and for Thailand’s theme of advancing partnerships for sustainability, to promote all aspects of sustainability and strategic connectivity between ASEAN’s development plans and China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

 

Gen Prawit lauded the joint effort by ASEAN and China to reach conclusions on the South China Sea Code of Conduct last July, which was designed to promote mutual trust and turn the South China Sea into a sea of peace, stability and sustainable development.

Yeah, well, I would not advise taking on China in a hot war. On the other hand, I would not advise turning a blind eye. I would like to see all nations using transport through the South China Sea blatantly ignore China’s unjustified unilateral claim. Collectively, all nation’s to continue sailing/flying under long established international law. I would say the same about Russia’s unilateral seizing of the Crimea, sovereign territory of the Ukraine.

Have a dig about on the Internet and you might discover the the 'eleven-dash-line' was drawn up by RoC (as it was then) and still maintained when they ran away to Taiwan (as it is now) and they are equally adamant that it stands today. However, Taiwan being a nice cuddly democracy, and China not, the blame lies squarely in the mainland China court.

 

The original dispute goes back to the Sino/French war of the late 1800's when the French took Vietnam and declared it's seaboards overlapped China's. Further complications arose when the Japanese were booted out of China and it's islands post world war 2 and the seas were largely given to Taiwan. Phillipines joined in with their claims in the fifties and Malaysia and Brunei waded in later.

 

So as we stand today, there is an initiative to agree demarcation and code of conduct in the South China Sea between the nations involved, but for some reason, those who have no skin in the game keep yelling and bawling about 'China's bullying.' Quite frankly they should go boil their heads.

 

Oh and when you see Reuter's pet phrase 'through which $5.4tn in trade passes each year,' $4.8tn of that trade is China's, so why the flap if not only to stir the pot?
