I meet Spike Milligan's mum in Woy Woy (actually in Booker Bay which is next to Woy Woy). She thought we were from the Council and wanted to give us an ear full about something but we were with the Dept of Public Works surveying for the sewerage reticulation scheme. We did a lot of what we referred to as "brown fishing" in the job which meant opening sewer manholes and putting the levelling staff down to get levels on the invert of the existing pipes.Literally a schitty job. 2 1
Popular Post owl sees all Posted November 10, 2020 Author Popular Post Posted November 10, 2020 Owl Log - 10-11-2020 - Tuesday morning No rain for 10 days. Although there was a light shower in Ban Dung a few days ago. That was enough to wet some of the rice, that then had to be dried in the sun before bagging up. Less than 20% of the rice has been harvested so far. I reckon just at the turn of the month (Nov - Dec) for us. At the moment all our rice is upright; unlike some other farms. Mrs Owl broke my fish feed scooper, messing about with some soil. I made a new one out of a plastic milk carton. Mildred gave it a trial. Works a treat. Dan has been visiting every morning and staying with us all day. That's good news for M who does a bit of exercise riding about on the farm. I think I've lost my Carrera to her. That's OK with me. I do all the checks; tyres, chain, brakes etc. Right now ladies. Get going for the village. The eucalyptuses (or is it eucalyptii) are growing very well. This pic' of number four farm has our house in the background. Mildred and Dan will soon be dwarfed by the trees. They are five months old (the trees that is). Sorted out the fishing tackle. New floats, lighter lines, swivel - which serves two purposes; stops line twisting, and, allows a tying point for a different strength line - number seven hooks also. We were using number tens before. So far results have not improved. I think the Buddha man has been having the fish away. That tree at number six pond is still leaning. Maybe it will never fall! But, I've a feeling in March, when the strong winds arrive, it will go down. A couple were digging for 'kadek-kadeks' in farm two Sunday. They are a local delicacy and sell for one baht each. The lady offered to sell me some. Pity I didn't have any dosh on me. Here farang! Take a few to eat with your cuppa later. It will soon be like a mad house with the rice cutting. Looking about, I can see that later this week will be the big start. The price at the whole sellers is awful. Six baht a kilo for Isaan rice (sticky) and eight for Thai rice (soft white). Farmers cannot afford to sell at that price. I can't get my head around it. Why are prices so low after so little rice has been harvested? Must be that other parts of Thailand are well in front of us. Looks like we will be storing our harvest for a few months. So Biden did it! Trump got the silver medal, but he is not happy. Is Thailand? The footy is still throwing up unusual results. Villa thrashed The Gunners on their patch and Reading - who stormed to the top of the Championship after eight games, and amassing 22 points - have now lost three on the spin. Strange; but exciting, season. Started doing the home-teach with M yesterday. A bit of maths and a bit of English. Finished off with a game of chess; we played a draw. It made me realise how much they don't do at school. What do they do? Her maths has gone backwards and reading has not improved in six months. It's up to me. I know it. Can't blame others. Mildred doesn't get it at the moment. I hope she will before long. Just had a call about the guitar I ordered for Mildred off Lazada. Mrs Owl took the call. She wasn't best pleased that she was not the first to know. I wasn't even gonna tell her. Wanted a big surprise. In the dog-house again. Charkie still not eating. Right at this moment she has biscuit, tinned food, and a slice of dried fish in her bowl. What to do?! The Dem's are in. Better get some long-life tinned food in. And crates of water. Get the bunker at the farm ready. Take care out there. Bye y'all. 9

You are right about the food and bunker HP. We are just a stone's throw away from the massive VoA site. If it kicks off under the Dem's, which it surely will somewhere or t'other, I just hope we can get underground if need be. Have a well seven metres deep. Will The Don refuse to leave the White House? I'm not too sure about that at all. I think he will leave and vow to return in 4 years. On a more serious note; Mildred's guitar arrived today. How's that for service? CoD. Only ordered it Saturday. 2

Popular Post owl sees all Posted November 13, 2020 Author Popular Post Posted November 13, 2020 Owl Log - 13-11-2020 - Friday morning What a lovely day.Just a few wispy clouds and a strong, but forgiving sun. Mrs Owl has just given me brekkies, and Mildred just stiring. My man in the golf Masters is up there. Got him at 100-1 e/w. Come on Lee; hang in there. You can do it. I need some dosh. Last night England recorded another glorious footy win. I also checked on F1, to see if it still on the go. It is! But Viet Nam will not be hosting a race next year. Shame that; can get a train from Nong Khai to Viet Nam. Would I go to a F1 event if I was paid to do so? There was some talk of a race around the streets of Bangkok a few years ago. Then a race around the Udon Thani ring road, or was it Khon Kaen. All died a death anyhow. Is F1 on it's last legs? In Portugal (October) only three cars didn't get lapped, and even less in Spain (August), where the winner lapped all but two cars. Hardly an exciting spectator sport; even if there were any. I want to see tyres flying off. Fires in the pit. Rivalries leading to fisticuffs. Overtaking; but not just lapped cars, and two cars at the same time in the finishing straight, going for that checked flag. ############################################################# Mildred's belated birthday prezzie arrived on Wednesday. Only ordered over the w/e. Great service Lazada. She is hard at the practice as I type. Wow! that sounds so good M. You are a genius. No wait! It's Van Morrison on the TV. ############################################################## Found some mango seeds in the EM drum. The EM had devoured the fruit and left the seeds, which I planted individually in a tray. Twenty one in all. ############################################################## Found a nice Buddha compound. Different colours to normal. Now, I'm thinking, is that the finished job or just the undercoat? Gonna pass through this area in a couple of weeks time. Interesting to see if they are still in Liverpool colours. Eat your heart Wolves! Red is the new gold. ############################################################## At the farm I've been sorting out the plastic rubbish. Separating the soil from the plastic sleeves. Mrs Owl wants to bag it all up and dump it in the woods. I will not have it. "It's our rubbish teerak, we must dispose of it responsibly." At least five words in that sentence that she wouldn't understand. Not even worth wasting my breath. ############################################################## We have been lucky with the rice not falling over. Just a little down at the mo'. Keep 'em crossed. Just looked at the weather map. Could be some wind and rain at about 06-00 on Sunday morning. ############################################################## A couple of farms near us are harvesting. Not the usual gangs of 6, 8 or a dozen. The price is so low that the farmers and their wives are going it alone. Just cannot justify paying out 300 baht a day, when the price is just 6 baht a kilo. There is only a 6/7 day window to get the rice in. If it falls from the stems; all is lost. ############################################################### Mildred had been riding to the farm each day this week. Mrs Owl has joined her for the last couple. "How ya getting on with the gears Mil?" The Carrera has 24. "OK Dad. I like the bottom one. Not tried any others." ############################################################### Planted the bigger of the two avocadoes into an empty ring yesterday. This is one that was grown from seed. ############################################################### Mildred caught one of those jumbo snails. Not quite as big as the one I found in number one pond, but not bad. And they were at it again the following day trying to get another. "Any luck Mil?" "Not yet Dad. Only a little crab." ############################################################## Passed by the new Udon University in the week. Plenty of new structures to admire. Must be the main building at the end of the drive. Footy stadium ready!? ############################################################### Eucas going from strength to strength. Still not regretting the planting of them. Have the dry time to come though. ############################################################### Trump still hanging in there. My flutter is in limbo. Come on courts; call it for the pres'. Put me in the dosh. I'd hate to lose 4 squids. We all know the superhero song 'something like this', but Mildred put me onto a Ukraine choir singing it. Absolutely lovely. Just have to share this delightful performance with the posters. Take care out there. Bye y'all. 12 1
Popular Post Kadilo Posted November 13, 2020 Popular Post Posted November 13, 2020 Great Post. England won at a canter. They have to find a way of getting Grealish into the main side. Brings something no one else can do. Big game now next June against the Scots. Congrats to them for getting over the line. Loving the Buddha colors. Can’t see that staying the same for long. You will have to post a video of Mildred banging out a tune once she gets up to speed. Great to see kids playing music. Lovely video of the kids choir. If that don’t bring a tear to ones eyes then something is missing. Great to see videos like this. Makes you realize there is always something to look forward to. God bless them. 2 1
Popular Post bannork Posted November 13, 2020 Popular Post Posted November 13, 2020 The weather is truly wonderful at present. I love the rainy season with the rampant verdant growth but it does making weeding around 250 young banana trees a task even Sisyphus would empathize with. Still, the undergrowth has been conquered, and with an irrigation system, free straw and cow manure the next few months should be hunky dory for both my Napier grass and banana trees. Getting up at 5.00 am for an early breakfast, leaving the house as dawn breaks just before 6.00 on the trusted salaeng, 3 wheeled motorcycle, is a joy with a gentle mist across the fields and a day where I never break into a sweat despite the sunlight because the air is cool. Up here both Covid and pm2.5 mean nothing, clear skies and fresh air Come 6 pm, it's time to light a fire next to the cowshed. Relief for the cows from the mosquitoes at dusk, plus warmth and light for us and them. 6

Popular Post owl sees all Posted November 18, 2020 Author Popular Post Posted November 18, 2020 Owl Log - 18-11-2020 - Wednesday afternoon. Things bouncing along as usual. In the fields, a lot of rice seems to be almost over-ripe to me. Chai and his wife have been cutting and laying out the rice ready for gathering, bundling and threshing. We are a week off that stage. ***************************************************************************************** Have arranged to have the grass cut in both euca farms. The cutter - our usual guy - is getting 6k baht. He has to use his own cutter, but we supply the benzine. He has already started in number four farm, but has stopped to harvest his own rice. Looks much cleaner after the cut. Last cut 'til April I hope. ****************************************************************************************** I did threaten Mrs Owl with me walking around the village with all my hats (18) on if she didn't buck up. Got them together and even tried them on. Mildred took a pic. Just too silly for words. I'll put that idea on hold. Must think of something else to bring the Mrs to her senses. ***************************************************************************************** I'm thinking that Mil' will be involved in art or fashion later in life. She knocks out these drawings so quickly and effortlessly. This particular girl has had a chin job. Guitar in the spare room at the mo'. She thought she would be able to master it in an hour or so. I'll have to give her some encouragement. Money; to get her started!! ************************************************************************************ I am dismayed. OK! I admit to clearing our area, if I see rubbish, but I'm sure others would, if I was unable. The soi parallel to ours is a disgrace. There is simply no excuse for this filth. ****************************************************************************************** The neem tree is growing fast and flourishing. Very useful tree. Insect repellent; sterilizer; mouthwash etc. A member of the mahogany group if I recall. ***************************************************************************************** Mildred and Dan were so active around the ponds that the carp were very timid when I fed them yesterday. Big Orange is always first to the food. He is about 12 years old. The mekongs were very subdued. But they showed eventually. Hunger trumped fearfulness. ***************************************************************************************** Mil' and Dan still riding to the farm every day. ****************************************************************************************** Guy has constructed a small sprinkler system for his garden plants. He has electricity and Buddha; can be useful. He still owes me for the two water tanks. ****************************************************************************************** Mrs Owl found a place in Ban Dung where they sell avocadoes. Eight for 100 baht. They are a bit on the small size, but I'm more concerned with the seeds. Got seven up and running this morning. Put in the sticks. Got the pots ready. Added the special water, with a little growth hormone added, and it's wait and see time. Have to check the water levels every couple of days. ****************************************************************************************** Be good to get back on the footy this coming week end. Been listening to Richie Allen on iheart radio. He has had both Professor Delores Cahill and Dr Vernon Coleman as guests this week (pm for links). Very eye-opening. Soon to me very risky to argue over topics with the Mrs in England. Have to hold tongues. Not good to be in prison for voicing an opinion. Mildred finding the home-teach maths very difficult. Working on square and cubic measurement this morning. And the main stumbling question! We have a cube 7cm x 7cm x 7cm. What percentage of a litre or Kg is the cube; if filled with water? The answer is 34.3%. Mil couldn't work it out. What are these schools teaching? Or is it me? Not being able to put across my lectures as I once could. She did beat me at chess though. Trump is still the man. Withdrawing troops in a bid to say 'I kept my promise'. What about dropping the charges against JA? Biden chomping at the bit. Will he ever make it? Dairy of a farang one year old today. Thanks everyone. Take care out there. Bye y'all. 9

Maybe your expectations are a tad high. When Mildred was off school earlier in the year we did a lot of work on this stuff. Then she returned to school and 6 months later it's as though we never did anything in that direction. The biggest problem I see, - and it must be the same in most Thai schools - is that Mil' will listen and nod away, giving the impression that all is understood. But, instead of saying "would you run that by me again teacher; I didn't quite get that," the pupil/student says nothing. It's only later that it's realised that precious little has sunk in. I have to be careful. Tomorrow, I'll tread with care. Wouldn't want her to think that Maths is not beautiful. Back to the original question (7x7x7). We have drawings and charts on the wall and I thought she understood what it was all about. Anyway; 7x7x7 = 343 divide by 10 = 34.3%. Easy Peasy.

Pettits Lane eh! Round the back of Rafaels Park*. I was not far away in Dagenham Dock. Romford people were posh to us. Even now, when I talk, people would know I came from Dagenham. Romfordonians had their own language. Us Dagenites could hardly understand 'em. Not that we wanted to; unless she was dressed in leather garb and liked to rough it. Virtually all our teachers came from the Romford area. They looked down on us, especially the Thames View lot. But we did have the Dagenham Girl Pipers and later Brian Poole; or was he Barking? Bobby Moore was also Barking (43 Waveney Road) and Martin Peters played for Dagenham Bethel. Don't know anyone famous who came from Romford (now in Havering). I do recall that Mark Lazarus settled in Romford. I can remember cattle being sold at Romford Market. Is that market still going I wonder? * Do you remember that dare-devil who would do the pole swaying in the park?

And the main stumbling question! We have a cube 7cm x 7cm x 7cm. What percentage of a litre or Kg is the cube; if filled with water? The answer is 34.3%. Mil couldn't work it out. Yes, as it's 7x7x7=343cm3 The weight also follows as 343ml, as the definition of a kilogramme is one litre of pure water. 2

Bang on the money, as usual, Bluesofa. Have you a favourite mathematician? My fav's are Pythagoras and Bernoulli. Just love their simplicity. 1
