Thailand earns better Doing Business ranking

 

   

BANGKOK(NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak is aiming to make Thailand one of the top 20 in the World Bank’s Doing Business Index next year, ordering the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission to raise public awareness of this matter.

 

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak presided over a meeting on improving the country’s Doing Business score in the World Bank’s ranking. The meeting was attended by the Minister of Finance Uttama Saowanayon, the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission (OPDC) Secretary General Pakorn Nilprapunt and delegates from related agencies.

 

Officials in this meeting discussed the latest Doing Business index for 2020 from the World Bank, on which Thailand is ranked 21st, which is a 6 position improvement from last year. The country has received higher scores in the Starting a Business category at 92.4, higher than last year 92.3.

 

The DPM said this improvement shows that Thailand is a grade A student, adding that the government now aims to improve the country’s ranking to be in the top 20 next year, through improvements in areas such as international trade.

 

He has ordered the OPDC to raise public awareness fn the Doing Business ranking, stressing that the reduction of obstacles and implementation of more business-friendly regulations will help attract more investment, which will improve business performance and the national economy.

The ease of doing business in Thailand might be vastly improved by removing corruption and envelope exchange from the process. 

But that is like expecting the sun to rise in the west.

Hiring foreign expertise continues to be a significant problem for most Thai start-ups and small businesses. There was a TDRI plan to revamp the whole work permit / business visa process to increase "ease of doing business" in Thailand  Wonder what happened to that?

It sounds like more the rest of the world is slipping. 

 

Thailand is fine, as long as, you are not operating inside the country.

Rather than raising awareness in the general public, here is a radical suggestion, raise awareness in the bureaucracy of what petty aggrandising rule interpretation does for Thailand's reputation. Learn that there is a thing called precedent, and consistency across the board. 

A 0.1% improvement is sold as major improvement.

A blind leading the blinds.

 

Work permits, visa regulations and innovations are not part of this index. Just one more statistic with zero relevance. This country needs foreign expertise to improve their skill level or they will end up as failed country.

Another meaningless ranking.

Get rid of the stupid 49/51% rule the same as Myanmar has done. Then watch businesses take off.

Then Thais can’t have the upper hand. This is why they are going to be left behind as their neighbors eventually overtake them.

 

I hope I’m alive to see the day when Cambodians and Burmese hire Thais to clean their homes and cut their lawns with weed whackers. What comes around goes around.
