Student Loan Fund (SLF) manager Chainarong Katchapanan on Tuesday (November 26) denounced the “groundless rumour” circulating on social media that the SLF would remit the debt of borrowers who switch their religion to Islam.

“The rumour is completely groundless,” he said.

“It is not true that the SLF will remit the debt of borrowers who convert to Islam. Religion has no influence on the loan application or conditions. Borrowers should refrain from believing unverified information and contact the SLF office if they have any inquiry,” he said.

“The SLF is an affiliate of the Finance Ministry, which assigned two banks under its supervision to handle loan applications – Krungthai Bank and the Islamic Bank of Thailand. Borrowers can freely choose to apply for a loan at either of these two banks.”

Chainarong said Krungthai Bank had been assigned to manage the SLF’s applications since 1996, and in 2010 the Finance Ministry decided to add the Islamic Bank to the campaign to increase its service channels for borrowers.

“The SLF currently has 5.7 million borrowers, 97 per cent of them applied via Krung Thai Bank, and 3 per cent through the Islamic Bank,” he said.

"Students" that might believe this sort of hokum truly are in need of basic education.

People convert to Christianity because they believe their moral debts will be forgiven, just to balance the craziness factor

Students in the US are able to get interest-free loans courtesy of a groundbreaking initiative by The Islamic Society of North America and the Islamic Development Bank.

Loans are offered as $15,000 annual scholarships to non-Muslim as well as Muslim college students seeking to study medical sciences or engineering. The money repaid in interest-free installments is used to replenish the fund for further loans.

Sounds to me like a good idea worth copying here and elsewhere.

I don't think I'd convert to Islam, even for one day. Not for love or money.

But then I suppose it depends how much beer I was going to drink at Uni. That would have to be funded of course. Maybe it would be worth it for a short time. Hmmm...
