Nonthaburi - Nice Activities?

Recommended Posts

Hello, i'll spend a few days in Nonthaburi also visiting Thai friends, roughly near skytrain station Wong Sawang (Purple Line). Do you have any suggestions for activities around there (strictly family friendly), also maybe nice restaurants? Is there an atmospheric old town or riverside to explore? (I might do that alone.) Atmospheric cafés, Sunday markets etc. We might not have a car, but can use taxi etc. Of course we can go to more central parts of Bangkok, but it would be nice to have a few things to do in close proximity.

Thanks for all Nonthaburi suggestions!

Go  to Koh Ket on weekends. The ferry runs from Wat Sanan Nuea (sp) in Pak Kret. You can also go to the daily market out by the Nothanburi Pier which I like a lot. MPH station, then taxi.

you can thus visit anything close along that purple line. NTB(muang) has an extremely busy wet market, but its not nice at all, its Thai and chaotic and there is also not much in buildings-except the clock tower at the river. Just off the main rd are some old-style and nicely renovated wooden buildings of the khet=district office and the old prison. The tipical 1st timer always goess crazy about the river boatline, all the way to sapan Taksin BTS. You can also see the new parliament under constr where the latest MRT crosses the river. Way better organised and recently all renovated is the Tao Poon market near that MRT stop, across from the tesco, hidden between the houses along street.

Near the outer end of the line is yet another giant shop-centre with IKEA2 in Thai-connected via footbridge (one but last stop).

There is/used to be a weekendmarket just off the big rd to Pak Kred (bus 505 also passes) but its not for you-2nd hd clothes, cheap stuff, for those with min. wage or less.

Way better and even slightly rural is the west side opposite the river-take ferry across and then one of the songhthaews or also a orange ST from NTB market area over bridge. One of the riverside wats is famous as the (former?-I dont know really) abbot was passionate about poor people and had several things on the grounds to help them out.

Chalerm golden jubilee park which fronts onto the river is very nice to wander around. Something for all ages. Immaculate laid out gardens with lots of waterways. Teak house you can go in for free, lots of children's play equipment and also plenty of exercise machines. Walk along the river front, buy some fish food and watch the fish come in their thousands. Lots of salas too where its nice to have a picnic if you take one. No public transport though so have to get there in a taxi. Also known as Chalerm Prakeat park. Crowded weekends but great midweek.

Opposite and to the north of Nonthaburi Pier.

Central Plaza Westgate is near the far end of the purple line, and the nicest shopping centre around.

The Tree House restaurant on Sanambin Nam Rd is a nice riverside restaurant.

Nok Hook market is a huge night market open every evening near Central Plaza Rattanathibet.

Get a bus to Nonthaburi Pier and take the orange flag boat for a cheap and scenic trip down to Saphan Thaksin.

That would be Baan Rabiang Nam, The River Tree House. It's great. But, it really requires a self drive or a taxi, at least from Phra Nang Klao Bridge MRT.

For a cheap, easy trip, you can catch a northbound #65 bus and explore Nonthaburi Market. It's a classic:  https://goo.gl/maps/NipXPfH6UhuBjxdRA The bus will set you back 8 whole baht!

We balways pick up some mini-eclairs from Non Bakery when we are in the area: https://goo.gl/maps/ZfP9UmooTm5f5rH69

Thai and chaotic makes it great! Its got energy. I hate those organized tourist markets.

Oh and a plus one for that Bakery listed above. Fabulous fat pills there!

This place makes a great air con jogging track if you go early.

Even when it's busy the vast majority of the people there go to suck up the air and people watch rather than buy anything since most of the brand shops are too expensive.

Hi all, thanks for some great tips and even photos. All that sounds tempting! Still open for more suggestions!

On a side note: I will go to Nonthaburi on a weekday night at 10.30 pm from Suvannaphum by taxi. My destination is quite easy to find, but:
- is it easy to get a taxi to drive me from Suvannaphum to Nonthaburi (38 km acc. to Google Maps)?
- will they turn on the meter? If not, which fixed price should i accept?

I know about the trick with going to the departure gate for a taxi. I know about Air Asia flying into Don Meuang, but won't use them. Also i have a the Grab app from the Philippines, but don't know if it works immediately in Thailand (on the airport perhaps not applicable, and i might have to fumble with the new Thai number i hope to aquire at Suvannaphum). So any suggestions regarding taxi trip Suv.-Nonthaburi are welcome. (I am aware that i could do it by Skytrain.)

Thanks!

If you go downstairs to the regular taxi queue, they will use the meter though some may try it on if they think they can get away with it.

If you go upstairs to departures, ignore any taxis parked with driver out of the car because that means they have paid off security and want to recoup that. Just get in any taxi about to head off after dropping their passengers. 99% will be happy to go anywhere by meter because otherwise they will be driving back to the city empty.

Going to Wong Sawang there will be 2 tolls to pay on top of the meter 25 + 50.

Moontang + Demon, thanks.

I will have heavy luggage and a very long and tiring day after me, so i'll take a taxi this time.

Meter should be less than 350...you can likely skip the toll that late, and it not effect time.  I would do top floor departure area, and blend in with people unloading..if you need the big cab or SUV, that is a different animal.  And, as stated, the Non Pier is quite an interesting cast of characters..great place to do beers from the two 711, a pay toilet, and families feed the fish...on a bad day it can look like skid row, but there is CCTV and the main police station is right there.  Ferry business is booming.  Sunsets out there are awesome.

Owl Market is a better choice for families, especially roomy during the week.
