Giant fish takes bite of German tourist

Featured Replies

I saw in the Thai news a few weeks back a shark attack on Bangsaen beach (North of Pattaya) where they had caught the relatively small reef shark (I think) and dragged it up on the beach.

Yeah that low underwater visibility is a b1tch, I'm surprised that sharks haven't starved in droves yet because of that...

No waaay? Sharks here? They have sharks in Koh Chang too? I wont go into the water off the East Coast of the USA so as not to be ripped and torn into bloody shreds while I scream my life out as chunks of me are swallowed by some primitive apex predator!

Fisheries expert and vice dean of the Faculty of Fisheries of Kasetsart University, Dr. Thorn Thamrongnawasawat, said on his Facebook page today that shark attacks are very rare in Thailand, with the last one happening in Phuket in 2017, with all attacks being attributed to small bull or blacktip reef sharks.

His information is a little dated - there was a similar shark attack (acknowledged by the authorities as such) in Khao Tao, just south of Hua Hin, in 2018.

The story was the subject of multiple threads on this very site. The victim was paid 67,000 Baht compensation by the Tourist Ministry.

Bull sharks in Khao Lak is not good news. Nang Thong is the busiest beach and this will scare tourists and authorities.

...some of them are made of rubber, they made a film about it in the 70's!!????????

Ah balls. That'll lure the Chinese tourists in. Now they now there's shark fin soup available.

It must have been a very fat german if you have space for 20cm deep bite marks in your leg.

If there are no tourists you can't scare them

Bowl shark?  Even Google is no help there.

Maybe bull shark?

Still safer in the water than on the road getting there.  And not just in Thailand.

Indeed. There are definitely sharks in Thai waters, pretty unfortunate to encounter one but is not to be excluded.

Shark? Nah, that would be the Mai Khao Crocodile. ????

I suppose it makes a change from being a target of the land sharks......

Loan sharks are way more common in Thailand than bull sharks...
